What's New in Literacy Research
This week's research is about how to keep our middle school students motivated and confident when learning vocabulary words. Recent research published in The Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy determined that middle school students' motivation and confidence in solidly related to their continued vocabulary growth. The ability to use words that frequently appear inside and outside of school helps prepare our students for success. The researchers found that if students are given opportunities to collaborate with each other during vocabulary learning, are given "real world" articles to read that reinforce the use of those words, and are able to use those words in their own writing that vocabulary knowledge is the key that students feel more capable and more interested in their learning.
