VTHS Summer Enrichment Program a Huge Success!

An enthusiastic group of students took advantage of this summer's Enrichment Program at the high school. Three of the students were new to the Vernon Township School District and chose to attend both weeks of the program! By the end of the program, all students became more comfortable with the building and their peers - and are now ready for the school year!

The teachers held STEM and team building activities - conducting the Marshmallow Challenge, Building a Penny Boat, creating crystal ornaments, and designing an Egg Drop Safety Car. Students got the opportunity to work in the Foods Room and held a cupcake decorating contest. They also made pizzas at the end of the second week.

Mindfulness activities were held where the students were able to reflect on themselves and how they see their own personalities. They described their life in pictures, completed an "I am" reflective story, worked together on a diversity BINGO activity, and completed a short story response.

The students were able to build their own bat house and bird house, painting and designing both for their own yards at home.

Physical activities such as Disc Golf, Can Jam, and basketball allowed the students to work together and get to know each other better. A geometry lesson was linked to the Disc Golf course as students created a scaled map of the course.

Interest building activities - a fingerprint lab and microscope lab - allowed the students to get a glimpse of future course possibilities.

A highlight of Week 2 was having the students research and develop a survival plan for a Zombie Apocalypse! Working in teams, they determined where they would live after researching the environment and other significant data of the area, who they would bring with them, and what supplies they would need.

Finally, the students had the opportunity to tour several of the specific rooms - Cosmetology (with a private talk with Ms. Susan), the kitchen behind the cafeteria (guided by Ms. Remner and staff), the sculpture room, the CFM room, computer labs, and the library.

Students also planted flowers at the front of the high school and were able to enjoy vegetables from the school vegetable garden at home with their families!

The students had an enriching experience, exploring the building and creating positive relationships with their peers and teachers.

Many thanks to Mrs. Ashley Lambrinides and a talented team of teachers who made this program possible!
