Kindergarten
This week in Kindergarten we read “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” by Paul Galdone. We had a great time comparing and contrasting this book to “The Three Little Pigs” themes and causes and effects. We also worked on writing and labeling the story in order from beginning, middle and end.
We are continuing to build on our addition facts and are beginning to use our problem solving skills.
Our favorite thing was our STEM Fairy tale activities on Friday! We built Cinderella’s castle with tanagram blocks, The Three Bear’s Bed with cupcake holders and placed pennies on top to test their strength and a ramp for Rapunzel to escape her tower. We reflected afterwards drew pictures and wrote small stories.
First Grade
This week in Ms. Molnar’s class we are finishing up our unit on Responsible Citizenship. We have learned all about rules and laws, making good choices, being good sports and many other things to help us be responsible citizens in the community. We are getting excited for our first field trip of the year and are counting down the days!
Ms. Dyer’s students loved presenting at Hispanic Heritage night last week. They look forward for another opportunity to share their knowledge and creations.
Second Grade
In second grade, we learned many things this week as well as did some amazing experiments and began some amazing contests! In Ms. Cybulski’s class, we learned about 2-step word problems, math words, weather, citizenship, and Gooney Bird Greene. We also did a stem contest in the classroom where students got to build Angry Birds slingshots to knock down some towers, built our own lava lamps using science and carbon dioxide, and began a pumpkin science project.
Reminders: Field trip forms are going home this week for our history center field trip on Nov 7th. Please return those forms by Oct 22nd to participate in the trips. Also, please make sure you are additions approved and have the teacher’s permission before paying for chaperone fees online.
Third Grade
Mrs. Anderson’s also class participated in the Text Features surgery, along with Ms. Knight, Mrs. Ferguson, and Mrs. Sokoloff’s classes. Pictures are posted on Class Dojo!
Fourth Grade
This week in Mrs. Juracich's class, we began reading Frindle by Andrew Clements. Who says d-o-g means a hairy 4-legged animal that says "woof"? We're finding out what happens when someone decides that a pen is now called a frindle. Our words have power.
Mr. Press learned something valuable this week. If a student places asparagus in a sealed plastic bottle as part of a book report, DON’T OPEN THE BOTTLE A MONTH LATER!
Fifth Grade
Ms. Jensen’s class was visited by the Orlando Science Center, and had a great time learning about the Orlando Utilities Commission! Students learned all about renewable and nonrenewable resources and were able to build awesome solar powered fair rides!
Sixth Grade
Specials k-6

Hispanic Heritage Night
Hispanic Heritage Night is one of the traditional events our schools celebrate year after year. This year was a fun event full of projects, research, arts and crafts, maps, flags and lots of delicious food. Hispanic Heritage Night is one of those events that bring families and our entire school community together, we also learn and embrace the cultural diversity that surround us at OSS.
Teachers worked with their students in the weeks leading up to the celebration to research their selected Hispanic country. Staff, parents, and students, as always, were welcome to dress up, showing their culture with pride. Some classes had trivia games, power point presentations, and posters around the classroom. Parents and teachers collaborated in making food that represented their countries and many of our families came to share a night of fun, laughter, and culture.

Science Fair
OSS’s science fair is an excellent opportunity for our students to explore their favorite topic in science. It provides an avenue for student research, allow students to be actively engaged in their own learning, and to use their own creativity to solve a pressing problem in an imaginative way. A science fair builds a bridge between home and school - establishing bonds between students, parents, and teachers and inspires students to become life long learners.
All forms must be typed or filled out using blue ink. NO pencil!
Mr. Stampas is the adult sponsor. Stampas@orlandoscience.org, (407) 253-7304
Form 1B is signed by the student and the parent. Besides the start date of experimentation on form 1A (10/20/17), all other forms prior to experimentation will be dated in September.

STEM teams Forming
We have new STEM teams forming for upcoming competitions. These teams will meet off campus. The competition dates are in December, February, and May. These are general lower cost than some of the competition teams, but some cost is required ($15 per student for the February event and about $50 per team for the May event, and money for the t-shirts if they are not donated, and kit items.) I highly suggest looking into where the coach/adults work to see if funds are available for sponsorships.
Here are the list of teams that are forming:
- Gliders (K-6)
- Math (K-6)
- Mousetrap Car (K-6)
- Water Bottle Rockets (K-6)
- Egg Drop (K-6)
- Energy Transfer Machine (Rube Goldberg) (3-6)
- Junior Solar Sprint (4-6)
- Critter Comfort Cottage (4-6)
- Solar Energy Cook-Off (4-6)
- Vex Robotics (6)
- Balsa Bridge (4-6)
Please sign up at http://bit.ly/ossenergywhizteams if you are interested in your student joining a team. Students/parents will be notified if the student is selected for a team. No coach = No team. The point of these teams is for the experience. This is our first year and there is NO pressure on coaches or teams to win. We want them to have the experience, have fun, and be engaged in STEM.
STEM fair
K-5 STEM Fair

Creative Coding Contest
Energy Whiz Competition
STEM Teams Are Forming!
Students from kindergarten to sixth grade are invited to join a STEM team. Teams will meet off campus and compete at between one to three competitions. There are eight teams to choose from! Students that are not on a competition team will have a better chance of making the team since we want to make sure that ALL students are able to compete in STEM competitions. Also, if a parent volunteers to be the coach, the student has a higher chance of being on a team.
The teams are: Mousetrap Car (K-6), Water Bottle Rockets (K-6), Egg Drop (K-6), Rube Goldberg (Energy Transfer Machine) (3-6), Junior Solar Spring (4-6), Critter Cottage (4-6), Solar Energy Cook-Off (4-6), and Vex Robotics (6).
If you would like to sign up for a team, please sign up online: http://bit.ly/ossenergywhizteams. Signing up on the form does not mean you are on a team. You will be contacted if you were chosen for a team.

OSES invites K-6 parents and students to join us for Art Night on October 12th.
At this night families will be able to create their own amazing Ebru Art, Suminagashi and Zentangles. Please come and join us to HAVE FUN.
Marbling is the art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments
on a tray of oily water and the transforming this pattern to the paper. Marbling is very old and traditional Turkish art.
This technique makes you feel power of creativity by catching the mystery both conflicts and harmony of your own will power of water and paint. At the same time it provides you to live it by relaxing while you are taking a great pleasure with this event.
Suminagashi, much like Turkish art of Ebru, is a technique the Japanese use to explore the science of marbling. Zentangles takes us away from the unexpected and allows us to take a moment and relax creating beautiful tangles of art.

Orca's Core Values and character Education
Did you know there are scientifically proven benefits of being kind?
Watch the science of kindness video to learn more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=51&v=O9UByLyOjBM
Did you also know that kindness is teachable?
“It’s kind of like weight training, we found that people can actually build up their compassion ‘muscle’ and respond to others’ suffering with care and a desire to help.” Dr. Ritchie Davidson, University of Wisconsin
Or that kindness is contagious?
The positive effects of kindness are experienced in the brain of everyone who witnessed the act, improving their mood and making them significantly more likely to “pay it forward.” This means one good deed in a crowded area can create a domino effect and improve the day of dozens of people!
Character Education has begun at OSES and we are having a great time learning our social skills at school and the students are learning how to use these tools successfully too! This year part of our Character Education curriculum we have introduced "Operation Impact" our goal is to share and show how our students are reaching out to the communities, families and other students to show their positive character traits.
Here are a few character traits:
- Kindness
- Empathy
- Trustworthy
- Reaching Out to Others
- Building Friendships
We want to see how your children are using their character traits outside of school and featuring them each week in our weekly newsletter!! This is a great way to spotlight your child's positive influence that they have in our community and school! We look forward to seeing your pictures and experiences.
Please send a few pictures and small description of your children's activity (encourage them to write it on their own too). Pictures must be handed in on Monday's in order to make it for the Friday newsletter. They can be sent in to your child's teacher or emailed to Mrs. Krygowski at katherine.krygowski@orlandoscience.org
We can't wait to see our wonderful students putting #Operation Impact to work in our community!!!
