A Note from Ms. Owens

We are back in our full uniforms, the fall weather seems to have arrived and we are having another great week at St. Catherine! We are working on our phonics in kindergarten. In 3rd grade, we're learning how to round numbers. We are using Venn diagrams to organize textual information in 4th grade. In PK, we are learning how to follow routines and transition between activities. In 2nd grade, we are writing a paragraph about fall. In both 5th and 6th grade, we are learning about roots of words to expand our vocabulary. We are learning food ecosystems and the interdependency of the system in 7th grade.

Walk-A-Thon T-shirt Pick-Up is Tuesday, October 4 from 2:50 - 6:00 PM in the Church Vestibule. This is the only opportunity to pick-up your family's Walk-A-Thon shirts before the Walk-A-Thon, shirts will not be distributed through the school.

  • On Thursday, October 6, all SCA students will participate in our Walk-A-Thon. While we will move off campus for the walk, we will not cross any streets. We will follow the same route we used last year. The route will be staffed with adults to keep students safe.
  • That day, the School Advisory Board will provide each student with an all-beef hot dog, a bag of chips, and a scoop of Culver's Vanilla Custard.
  • Students who normally get milk will be able to have milk.
  • There will be an allergy-friendly dessert option. If your student is unable to eat ice cream, please complete this form, Allergy-Friendly Dessert for 10.6.
  • If your student prefers not to eat hot dogs, please send your student with lunch that day.
  • If you have any questions, please reach out to the School Advisory Board via email @ stcatherinesab@gmail.com.

As we approach the month of October, we are preparing to celebrate the Month of the Rosary. We will begin each Tuesday with the entire school saying a decade of the rosary. It will be a lovely start to those Tuesdays.

  • Join Family Faith Formation and the 55 Plus Club on Tuesday, October 11 at 5:45PM for a Living Rosary. Scroll down for more information on volunteer opportunities.
  • October is also "count month" for churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago. If you haven't been able to come back to Mass, please consider making the change now. All parishes have to report their attendance numbers to the Arch. Let's show our strength as the SCA community by showing up to Mass!

Hot Lunch is Coming!!

Our hot lunch program, My Hot Lunchbox, will begin next Wednesday, October 5. This year, Barraco's will offer a hot dog or mac and cheese each week while McDonalds will alternate weeks. Our first hot lunch of the year will offer Barraco's and McDonald's.

All families with updated accounts have received an email notifying them that the ordering window is open.

What is it?

All school families have the option of ordering their child(ren) a hot lunch from a local restaurant. At St. Catherine, this program is available on Wednesdays. All ordering is online.

  • Families with accounts should log into their account and update their child's classroom for this year.
  • Families that didn't participate in the program last year and would like to this year can create an account.

Month of the Holy Rosary

October is designated by the Catholic Church as the Month of the Holy Rosary because, in this month, the Church celebrates the Marian advocation of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7. Family Faith Formation and the 55 Plus Club are pairing up to present the St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish Living Rosary on Tuesday, October 11 at 5:45PM in the Church. We are in need of participants to sign up as a bead!

All ages are welcome! A copy of prayers will be provided.

7th and 8th graders: If you sign up to participate as a bead, you will receive one hour of service.

Please contact Ms. Ward if you have any questions.

Additional Online Safety Protocols

As you likely know, we are fully 1:1 with Chromebooks in 3rd-8th grades. This positive move in our technology also means the school needs to implement some additional protocols to maintain a safe, secure learning environment.

  • Beginning last week, students are only able to login to their Chromebooks using their SCA school email accounts. (We have a number of 8th grade students enrolled in high school math programs. Those students will be able to use their HS math logins on their Chromebooks.)
  • Also beginning last week, students are not able to receive emails from outside of the SCA domain nor will they be able to send emails to accounts outside of the SCA domain. As always, if a child needs to contact a parent or guardian, they should come to the school office.

The Sunday Collection

As many of us still attend church virtually, we do not have the opportunity to contribute to the Sunday collection. However, parishioners can easily set up recurring contributions via Give Central.

Visit the link below to set up your recurring contribution. Donors can change the amount of the contribution or pause it at any time.

Ways to Support Our Local Small Businesses

For many years, our small business neighbor have been stalwart partners with St. Catherine through offering Eat & Earns, sponsoring SCA events and offering discounts when the school places orders. Now is the time for our SCA community to show our support of these amazing small businesses. Please take the time to visit the "live" buttons below, and, if you are able, support them.

If you know of an SCA family who owns a small business that we can publicize here to help support them, please reach out to me via email.
