Definition

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions.

Cause

  • blow to the head or body
  • a fall
  • Other injuries that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull

Symptoms

  • headache
  • confusion
  • lack of coordination
  • memory loss
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • dizziness
  • ringing in the ears
  • sleepiness
  • excessive fatigue
  • sleepiness
  • depression

Field Treatment

  • remove from play
  • contact parents
  • apply ice
  • rest
  • go to doctor
  • call 911

Hospital Treatment

  • CT scan
  • evaluation
  • ibuprofen

Prevention

  • There is no true prevention for concussions
  • were proper head gear (make sure it fits)
  • good mouth guards
  • abide by the rules
  • stretching/strengthening of the neck muscles

Statistics

An estimated 1.6-3.8 million concussions happen in sports each year
