It was created to protect human health and to protect the environment by making regulations based on the Congress laws already passed.

History
The EPA was created on December 2,1970 by President Richard M.Nixon.In order to reduce pollution in our environment.Then,Senator Gaylord Nelson created the day we all know as Earth day which is on April 22 as a way to get the nation to help the government with cleaning our enviornment.
Head of the department
Gina McCarthy is the current chief for the EPA she was appointed by President Obama in 2009.She was appointed because she had common-sense strategies to protect human health and the environment.Her job as chief of the EPA is to provide better ways to use energy without causing as much damage to the environment.Her job is a wide range of things from going to tech companies to look at solar panels,to going to parks to teach about energy efficiency.

- President Richard M.Nixon was the one who proposed the idea of creating the EPA
- EPAs Clean Air Act of 1977 was passed into law in order to protect the environment against smoke stacks and automobiles.
- The EPA banned the use of DTT which is the chemical used to stop the spread of malaria by killing mosquitos because it caused cancer and killed many species of birds.
