Guided Reading and Mid-year Assessments

First Grade will start their mid-year literacy assessments this week. This will last until January 23rd. Therefore, our Guided Reading groups will look a little different. We will be using poetry and readers theatre to work with your child on their fluency skill. Please continue to read books from home, practice spelling, and do math homework using the ideas page in your child’s homework journal. Thank you for all of your continued support and dedication to the students!

Please remember to put your child's name on all jackets. The lost and found is growing daily, if your child is missing something please remind them to check the lost and found.

Practice Counting Coins

These past few weeks we have been identifying, writing the value of each coin and counting like and mixed coins, up to $1.00. Because we use plastic coins at school, any practice at home using real coins would be beneficial.

Karate Belt Math

Last week we introduced the “Bridge to Ten” strategy. I am attaching the Orange Belt flash cards we are using in class.

I hope you enjoy helping your student prepare for this at home. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Cluster 2 Problem Solving- Homework Option

See the link below for the types of problems we are solving in the classroom. Feel free to print them and work on them with your child.

Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club

Nichols is participating in an exciting program that encourages students in grades K through 6 to read for fun. Read to Succeed is a free program sponsored by Six Flags Theme Parks. Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before the school’s deadline noted below is eligible for a free admission ticket valid at one participating Six Flags Theme Parks. Students will develop a greater appreciation for books when they see that you think reading is important too. You are sure to have fun as you investigate the world of reading together!
