CITL Updates
October 2016
Warning about recent phishing attempts
The Service Desk and the Security Operations Center have learned of two phishing attacks affecting the campus; both attacks contain unsolicited invitations to either:
- Review a document with DocuSign, or
- Edit a Google Doc.
DocuSign Phishing Attacks
Customers are receiving invitations to review a document in DocuSign that appears to be coming from other customers on this campus.
Google Docs Phishing Attacks
Customers are also receiving unsolicited invitations to edit Google Docs from unfamiliar email addresses as well as @umd.edu addresses.
How to Avoid the Attacks
Frequently, the emails messages described above are fraudulent and actually direct you to a phishing site that attempts to lure you into submitting your email account and password. Do not click any links in the emails. Instead, promptly delete the email.
If you think you are a victim, take the following precautions to safeguard your accounts:
- Change your password on the compromised account as soon as possible, and it is recommended you change passwords to the other accounts on which you use the same password.
- Check your mail filters for auto-deletes or unwanted label settings,
- Check your "Send As" mail setting to remove any alternate reply-to addresses.
Specific information on implementing the above precautions is available at:
- Visit it.umd.edu/password, to change your UMD password.
- See: Understanding and Applying UMD Google Mail (Video Tutorial) for information on managing filters, labels, and other settings in Google mail.
