Nurse's Note: Brain Pain
March is National Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month. The traumatic brain injury or TBI that we are most familiar with is a concussion. According to TeenHealth from Nemours, “A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury (or mild TBI). It happens when a blow to the head or an injury makes the head move back and forth with a lot of force. This causes chemical changes in the brain and, sometimes, damage to the brain cells.”
Symptoms of a concussion include
· Headache
· Dizziness
· Light (including screen) and/or sound sensitivity
· Blurry vision
· Confusion and/or irritability
· Difficulty concentrating
· Seizure
· Tiredness
If you are a student or parent who has experience with a concussion you understand that the symptoms and consequently the timeline for concussion recovery vary a lot. Brains are beautiful but complex! The site where the brain is hit, how early the concussion is diagnosed, how much the brain is able to rest after the injury, and other variables impact how long and how well an individual heals.
Some students who are diagnosed with a concussion receive something called a concussion care plan (CCP). A CCP includes the student’s primary symptoms and plan of care (what the student can and cannot do as they heal). It also includes a timeline that guides the family, school, and coach (if applicable) regarding when the student can return to school and/or sports. If a student diagnosed with a concussion does not have a CCP or any other formal guidelines from a medical provider the school nurse and/or athletic trainer can develop a school-based plan to help the student in his or her road to recovery.
Some accommodations included in a CCP or a school-based nursing plan may include
· Rests during the school day
· More water and restroom breaks
· Limited screen time (paper-based testing)
· Extensions for schoolwork deadlines and exams
Every staff member in PWCS is required to have annual concussion training. Your (or your child’s) teacher is fully prepared to support you (or your student) if you (he/she) sustain(s) a concussion doing the school year. While it may be your first experience with a concussion, Nurse Catie and the staff have cared for many students who have sustained and healed from concussions. We ask that you notify Nurse Catie of the following so that she can pass along pertinent information to the teachers/staff
· The initial concussion diagnosis (documented from the medial provider)
· A CCP (or other medical plan if provided)
· A list of symptoms that the student is experiencing and what triggers/worsens the symptoms
· Updates from the medical provider as you receive them
**Note: Neither Nurse Catie nor the school cannot override a medical provider’s concussion care plan (or any other order). If a provider writes that a student cannot participate in sports, the student cannot participate in sports until the provider clears him or her via a written order.**
As we head into warmer weather, we know that accidents (including concussions) will happen. Wear your helmets! Don’t ever swim or hike alone! If you (or your child) sustains a traumatic brain injury, seek evaluation from a medical provider as quickly as possible.
