Leaving A Positive Digital Trail
LEHS students have been issued their Macbooks. This moment has been greatly anticipated by students and teachers. Our district has made a commitment to ensure our students have the best technology tools to enhance their learning. With the deployment of these powerful devices comes great responsibility. It is important that students take care of the device they are issued.
Here are some ways that students can insure that their district issued computer stays in pristine shape –
1) Charge laptop every night and bring laptop to school every day.
2) Always carry laptop in protective bag. No matter how careful you are bumping into things or dropping your device is less likely to cause damage if it is protected inside the bag.
3) Keep laptop secure. Do not leave it lying on the floor where it could be stepped on. Always place it on a flat surface that prevents falls. Keep it away from water. Do not leave it in hot cars.
4) Protect laptop from anything that will deface or scar the device. For example, do not use stickers, markers, or sharp objects on your laptop.
5) Do not eat or drink while using your laptop. Food and drink are some of the most common causes of damage to student computers.
In addition to taking physical care of their district issued laptop, students also need to review the District Responsible Use Policy which can be found here. District issued computers are a privilege that can be lost if students do not follow the Responsible Use Policy.
Some of the violations that could cause a student to lose their computer privilege are –
1) Bypassing the filter. Certain websites can have spyware that can damage your computer or content that is inappropriate for students. These harmful websites are blocked by the district filter. If students bypass this safeguard they are putting their computer and themselves at risk.
2) Using someone else’s login and password. All activity on a district device is linked to a user through their unique login and password.
3) Downloading or installing personal software. District computers are for approved educational use only. Some software can cause damage or void the device warranty.
4) Tampering with device hardware. Only district technicians can work on student laptops. If a student is experiencing a service failure with their district laptop, they should take it to the library and consult the Technician on duty.
We are so fortunate to be in a district that provides Macbooks. Let’s work together to make sure students are good digital citizens who are prepared to handle this privilege.

What You Do Online Is Permanent
Cyber-bullying
Sometimes cyber-bullying can be easy to spot — for example, if your child shows you a text, tweet, or response to a status update on Facebook that is harsh, mean, or cruel. Other acts are less obvious, like impersonating a victim online or posting personal information, photos, or videos designed to hurt or embarrass another person. Some kids report that a fake account, webpage, or online persona has been created with the sole intention to harass and bully.
Cyber-bullying also can happen accidentally. The impersonal nature of text messages, IMs, and emails make it very hard to detect the sender's tone — one person's joke could be another's hurtful insult. Nevertheless, a repeated pattern of emails, texts, and online posts is rarely accidental.
Because many kids are reluctant to report being bullied, even to their parents, it's impossible to know just how many are affected. But recent studies about cyber-bullying rates have found that about 1 in 4 teens have been the victims of cyber-bullying, and about 1 in 6 admit to having cyber-bullied someone. In some studies, more than half of the teens surveyed said that they've experienced abuse through social and digital media.
What can we do about Cyber-bulling? LEISD has an on-line tool called "Anonymous Alerts" that students, parents, and teachers can use to report harmful, harassing, and bullying type behaviors. Anonymous Alerts bullying reporting mobile app helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressures are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome. Anonymous Alerts encourages students, parents and staff to quickly, easily, and anonymously report bullying, cyber-bullying, gang-related issues, and other sensitive topics through private messages to school officials by building. All reports remain completely anonymous even during a two-way email conversation, although submitters have the option to reveal their identity if they prefer to have a person-to-person discussion.
To send a report from the Web/Internet go to: www.anonymousalerts.com/littleelmisd/

Attendance Matters - Semester Exam Exemptions
Every senior will have an individual meeting with his or her house counselor over the course of the next couple of months. Letters and a hall pass will be delivered to students during the week of their meeting.
During the meeting, students and counselors will review credits and graduation requirements to ensure everyone is on track and in the correct courses. We will also discuss post-secondary plans, and counselors will provide information and resources regarding college and scholarship applications, college entrance exams, military plans, and more.
Students will receive a document that outlines remaining graduation requirements and other pertinent information to share with parents.
Meetings began this week and will continue until we’ve had an opportunity to meet with every member of the Class of 2019. We are looking forward to cheering each of them on when they walk across that stage in May!
