*Congratulations to Ms. Christina Johnson! Ms. Johnson will finish out her last year as a 3rd grade teacher to become the next Principal at Steeby Elementary for 2019-2020 school year!
It has been an absolute pleasure to serve the Wayland community for the last 17 years, as I end my career in public education, and begin new ventures!
*Spring testing has just recently wrapped up, and the students have shown very good growth. Ask your child if they reached their Reading and Math goals.
*Research has shown that if student’s minds are not somewhat challenged throughout the summer they can lose up to one month or more of learning, especially in Reading and Science. The following are some tips to keep your child from “The Summer Slide”, as it’s called:
1) Teach mini-lessons. Transform everyday activities into learning opportunities. Children can count change, read directions for a trip, write a shopping list, or calculate a recipe’s measurements.
2) Gather activity books. Give children their own activity book with crossword puzzles or number games customized for their age group. Set a “due date” to keep them on track, but let them work at their own pace.
3) Initiate a writing project. Have your child keep a summer journal, write letters to family members or friends, or craft a play to perform with siblings or neighbors. Or, start a family cookbook with your favorite recipes, instructions, and shopping lists.
4) Strategize screen time. Educational computer games or apps can engage students’ minds, but make sure your child is spending enough time away from the screen. Assign a daily block of time for family members to turn off phones, computers, and the TV, and instead play a board game or read together.
5) Designate daily reading blocks. Set aside at least 20 minutes a day for your entire family to read. (parents too!) Find reading recommendations by grade level on the American Library Association’s book lists (see Web Resources, #9). Organize a summer read-a-thon with goals for each family member, or sign your child up for your library’s summer book club.
6) Go global. Set aside several nights during the summer to have an international evening. Together, cook a meal with recipes from a different nation. Learn basic words in that country’s language. Find the country on a map, and together examine a book or article with information on what life is like there.
7) Sneak learning into family trips. If your family is able to take a vacation during the summer, include stops at zoos, children’s museums, or historic sites. Have your child help plot out the journey using maps and keep a journal along the way. Older children can tally up miles, keep track of expenses, or compute gas mileage.
8) Get moving. Build physical activity into your child’s summer days. Even if they can’t participate in local sports leagues, encourage activities such as jumping rope, playing catch, and taking family walks.
9) Web Resources: The American Library Association compiles grade-level book lists. www.ala.org/alsc/compubs/booklists/summerreadinglist. The National Summer Learning Association offers activities, tools, and links. www.summerlearning.org/?page=activity_resource
*Teacher assignments for your child for the 2019-2020 school year will be available in early to mid-August. Thank You for sharing your child with us at Steeby Elementary!! Good Luck to both the 3rd and 4th graders as they transition to Pine Street Elementary! Have a fantastic Summer!!

Media Center News
In media classes students have been doing some fun iPad apps which focus on coding! Students enjoyed coding using the Light Bot, Bright Box, Cargo Bot, Daisy the Dinosaur and Tynker apps. All students also used the Quiver app to create a 3D personalized flag. Dash the robot also visited us in May. Students were able to use an app to move Dash around and make noises.
The last two weeks we will be in the computer lab reviewing our favorite websites from the year on Information Place. The Information Place site will also be accessible over the summer. Students may continue to go to their favorite educational sites at home by visiting Information Place. Here is the link: https://sites.google.com/waylandunion.org/libraries/home
Have a great summer! And Happy Reading!

Physical Education Fun
It's been a busy end of the year for Physical Education at Steeby!
We finished our half mile run and passed out top 10 medals for boys and girls in each grade. Every runner that finished has their name and time on a poster in the hallway right outside of the gym.
Field Day was mostly rainy and most classes only got through about half the events. For the week following, students had a mini field day during their Physical Education time where they rotated around to 4 stations out on the playground!
Our May students of the month are:
2nd grade- Abby Ainsworth and Santiago Sal
3rd grade- Peyton Prenatt and Gabe Zerbe
4th grade- Aydrian Gill and Quillan Sheffer.
