Dear HAS Community,

Yesterday was the first day of Hispanic Heritage month. Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Hillside Avenue School will be participating in this celebration by focusing on the history of this commemorative month and spotlighting some contributions made by change makers of the Latinx community.

Welcome back! It's time for the Scholastic Fall Book Fair! Lots of exciting titles to choose from.

ELEMENTARY PARENTS are also welcome to shop during Elementary Back to School night on Thursday, 9/22/22 from 7pm to 9pm.

The Fair will be open daily at dismissal until 3:15.

And don't forget that you can set up an EWallet for your child for easy, cashless shopping. Any remaining balances can be used at future book fairs and classroom orders. Directions for set up at the Scholastic Book Fairs website. Cash, check and credit card are still accepted.

Please make sure they are in a sealed envelope with your child's name, grade and teacher.

Start with Hello

We are pleased to share that Hillside Avenue School is continuing its participation in “Start with Hello Week.” The “Start with Hello” program teaches students the importance of including those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation and to create a culture of acceptance within their classroom, school, or youth organization. The program uses three easy steps to promote connectedness: See Someone Alone, Reach Out and Help (Be Brave and speak up), and Start With Hello!

No Dogs on School Property

No Dogs on School Property

Bringing along the family dog, especially with such pleasant weather, during arrival and dismissal has become a common practice for many. However, it does pose some safety concerns for students who have a fear of dogs.


Thanks to everyone for being mindful of keeping the school grounds free of any dogs so that all students can move about freely without worry of having to come in contact or pass by a dog on the premises.

Cell Phones/Smartwatches

Our cell phone policy is that students cell phones need to be off and away and smartwatches are only to be used to tell time. Please refrain from texting your child during the day to help limit distractions for our students. If your child feels ill please remind them to report to Nurse Dias and she will contact you. Students should not call their parents from the bathroom if they are feeling ill.

A Note From the Tech Department

For students in grades 3-12 who have issues with their school issued Chromebook, you can now have that addressed in the school instead of going to the Central Office. Have your child stop in to the main office at HAS and they will assist in getting the Chromebook repaired. In the meantime your child will receive a loaner Chromebook.

Riding to School

Riding to School

Many students ride their bikes to school. Bike racks are located by exit 13, near the back parking lot, and by the playground. If students choose to ride a bike or scooter to school, they must do the following:


1. Wear a helmet.

2. Make sure that they lock up their bike or scooter outside.

3. Obey all traffic laws and not ride in the parking lot.

Middle School Arrival

Effective Monday, 9/19/22, the back parking lot by the 7th and 8th grade doors is off limits for student drop off. The main drive horseshoe in the front of the school is open till 8:15 for middle school drop off. Please use the horseshoe instead of the back staff parking lot.

Visitors/Forgotten Items

  • Please know that when items for middle school students are dropped off the students will be called at the end of the period to pick up their belonging. This is to help limit interruptions.

  • If you are coming to the building for a meeting or to pick up a student please be aware that will not be allowing anyone to enter the building while the middle school students are passing between classes during period changes. We appreciate your patience.

  • You must have your ID to enter the building. If you are dropping off your child and you don't have your ID ring the bell and had your student enter the vestibule. Your child will then ring the second bell and the office staff will bring them in and direct them to class.

During morning arrival and afternoon pick up please make sure you are alert, driving slowly, and looking before driving in and out of the parking lot. Many students and parents walk to and from school and are crossing the street using the crosswalks. Even if you are running late it is imperative that you take your time and proceed with caution to ensure the safety of all. Thank you all for helping to keep everyone safe.
