St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 7 - Term 1 (Thursday 19 March)
St Jerome’s Primary School acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Owners and Elders, both past and present, of the lands on which this school is located.
Dear Parents and members of our school community
Our St Jerome's Community and the Coronavirus
Our response team has put all recommendations into place including the cancellation of assemblies and events and larger group meetings.We do ask that if you are unwell, or if your child is unwell, please do not come into school, even if it is to pick up another one of your children. If you are sick, please self-isolate. This ensures our community remains a safe environment for all our families and staff. You know we are in this together. At present there are many students away from school. They fall into these categories.
· parents who choose to keep their children at home;
· parents who have children at home because of their return from overseas;
· parents who have elderly relatives living close by.
Students are able to do the following lessons online:
· Reading Eggs – assigned tasks by teacher;
· Mathletics – assigned by teacher;
· Spelling Lists which are posted on See Saw.
Teachers will post the week’s learning intentions as well as spelling words.
- What will happen if there is a school closure – This is still an unknown entity. There are many rumours about what may happen, but we simply continue to follow what we are instructed to do from the government. Our teachers are working on ways to continue the curriculum delivery on-line in some form.
- You need to know that if you need some help, just contact the school and we will have someone contact you.
- Our families, our students, our staff are a resilient lot. We know we have each other’s backs. We look out for each other. That is core to who we are.
- While life is a bit messy at present and there is much uncertainty, it is such a blessing to have each other and have a place to belong. St Jerome’s is like being home; it is family. A beautiful thing has been happening over the last week; amidst all of this worry, so many parents have asked me how I am going. Not what I am doing, not what are all the action plans, but how I am going, like me, the person. No wonder I am the most blessed principal in the world.
- A quick thank you for bringing calm to our school, especially for our students. Hence the quote further below.
Water Bottles. Please can you ensure that your child has a water bottle, with a cover for the mouth piece, at school with them each day as the water fountains are no longer in use
There are taps available near the fountains for children to refill their bottles throughout the day. It would be very helpful if children filled their bottles at home before coming to school each day.
Take care, look after yourself and all those you love. Together we can make an uncertain time a place of calm and support for others.
Thanks again for all the support and understanding.
These incredibly wise words come from a Facebook site called Grandmother’s Love. I love them!
Year 1
School Tour
Our first school tour for prospective families was held this morning. Mrs Alaniz and I had the great pleasure of spending an hour with six new families. They enjoyed seeing our very happy children in all areas of the school.
Our next school tour, at this stage, is earmarked for next term, Wednesday 3 June at 9.15am
Spread the word and let us know if you will be joining me.

RE NEWS
Fourth Week of Lent (School week beginning 23rd March)
In India, over 70 million people live on less than US$1.90 per day.*
Sakun lives in a village in central north India. She developed polio as a child and has difficulty walking. Until now Sakun, an indigenous Gond woman, has been isolated in her community, unable to earn a livelihood and without knowledge of government schemes that could help her.
In 2018, Sakun joined a Caritas Australia-funded program which is implemented by Caritas India and its local partner, Samarthan. With your help Sakun now earns her own income and makes a small profit which goes towards her family’s basic needs. She is more resilient, more confident and more independent. Watch a short film about Sakun’s story. Let’s Go Further, Together! Please support Project Compassion: lent.caritas.org.au
Thirty-two-year-old Sakun lives in a village in central east India. She developed polio as a child and has difficulty walking. Until now Sakun, an indigenous Gond woman, has been isolated in her community, unable to earn a livelihood and without knowledge of government schemes that could help her.
Sakun lives with her sister in a rural area of Chhattisgarh, India’s poorest state. Home to 26 million people, with 10 million living in poverty.
Life is hard in this region, and even harder for the state’s indigenous people. Sakun belongs to the Gond tribal community which is amongst India’s officially designated Scheduled Castes and Tribes. Historically disadvantaged, they suffer higher poverty rates than other parts of India.
In 2018, Sakun joined a Caritas Australia-funded program which is implemented by Caritas India and its local partner, Samarthan. Through their strategic guidance and support, Sakun learned new skills and gained important mobility.
Sakun now earns her own income and makes a small profit which goes towards her family’s basic needs. She is more resilient, more confident and more independent.
With your help, Caritas Australia can help uplift vulnerable communities and support the right of indigenous peoples around the world. A brighter future women, men and their families can start today. Let’s Go Further, Together.
