Autism Awareness Month
Autism is a complex, developmental disability that remains with a person for his or her whole life. This condition affects the brain's functions. The first signs usually appear before a child is three years old. Some quick facts about Autism:
About 1 in 68 children will be diagnosed with Autism
Boys are 5 times more likely to be diagnosed than girls
There is no known, single cause of Autism
- Autism impacts every person differently
- Some people with Autism are nonverbal, while others are highly gifted in areas
- There is no cure for Autism
Autism affects girls and boys of all races and in all geographic regions and has a large impact on children, their families, communities and societies. The prevalence is currently rising in many countries around the world. Caring for and educating children and young people with this condition is an important priority for health care, education and training programs.
Earth Hour
On Saturday, March 24, people across the world turned off their lights for Earth Hour. By switching off the lights people raise awareness of climate change and the importance of energy conservation. On Friday, March 23, Limestone District School Board schools were encouraged to turn off any unnecessary lights for the duration of their lunch hour. This action showed dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Southview Public School saved 47 kilowatt-hours! That could:
- power 3615 CFLs (13watt) light bulbs for one hour;
- save 14 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions;
- power a laptop for 1044 hours.
Combined LDSB schools saved approximately: 1441 kWh!
