PROCESS

I will put a sequence of steps in chronological order.

What is process?

A process essay explains how to do something or how something occurs. It presents events in chronological order, and predicts a particular series of events that produces the same outcome whenever it is duplicated.

How do I write a process essay?

Clear, logical transitions between the steps in a process are extremely important. They need to strictly be in chronological order, meaning that you explain everything in the exact order it should happen, or happened.

Instruction

Instructions enable readers to perform a process.

Examples of instructions are:

  • Recipes
  • Operating manuals
  • Directions for locating a building

Process Explanation

Process explanation is to help readers understand how a process is carried out.

A process explanation does not use the second person (you) or commands. It is usually in the first person or third person, and it is either in past or present tense.

Examples:

First person (present tense) : After I boil the water, I stir in the macaroni and leave it to cook for ten minutes.

First person (past tense) : After I boiled the water, I stirred in the macaroni and left it to cook for ten minutes.

Third person (present tense) : After they boil the water, they stir in the macaroni and leave it to cook for ten minutes.

Third person (past tense) : After they boiled the water, they stirred in the macaroni and left it to cook for ten minutes.

What will I use process for?

  • In a biology paper
  • In an editorial
  • in a literature essay, tracing a character's progress towards a new insight

PLANNING A PROCESS ESSAY

When planning for a process essay, keep your readers in mind and remember to further explain anything unfamiliar.

Develop a thesis that identifies the process and tells why it is performed. State the thesis in your introduction. Each body paragraph should treat one major step of the process. The conclusion will briefly review the procedure's major stages.
