Yes, the Burleson Elks lost their District 5-5A Division II football game to the Aledo Bearcats Friday night, 46-6. But don't tell Elks coach Gary McElroy that his team got embarrassed.
"I think we handled ourselves just fine. We made them work for it," McElroy said. "Okay, we lost to the number one team in the state, but no one in this district is going to beat them, and we did some really good things tonight despite the score."
Actually, no one has beaten Aledo in a district game since they dropped a 35-28 contest at Everman on Oct. 5, 2007. The next week they began a 79-game state-record league winning streak that includes Friday's win.
It was also Aledo's 35th consecutive regular-season win, dating to the second game of the 2015 season.
Aledo improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in district, alone atop the league standings. The Elks fell to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in district, having also lost 21-7 the week before to crosstown rival Centennial. They are still very much in the postseason race.
The Bearcats won behind the running of Jase McClellan, who rushed for 218 yards and five touchdowns on 20 carries. He had TD runs of 2, 10, 14, 69 and 3 yards. His first three scores put Aledo ahead 20-0 before the Elks got on the board with a 23-yard field goal, the first of two on the night by Edgar Zaragoza, who later booted a 28-yarder.
In fact, the Elks had to settle for field goals twice after drives of almost five and a half minutes. They had another drive of almost six and a half minutes on which they reached the Aledo 1-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs at the 3.
"We left three touchdowns on the field. That's disappointing, but I'm extremely proud of the way our team played," McElroy said. "We ran the ball well against the number one team in the state. We made a point that we were going to run the football, that we were going to fight tooth and nail, that we were going to win back some of the dignity we lost last week (against Centennial)."
Burleson finished the game against Aledo with 142 yards, along with 87 yards passing from quarterback Jacob Amador, who was 8-for-13. He threw no interceptions against an Aledo defense that was averaging more than one per game.
The Elks' leading rusher was Jarrett Austin with 59 yards on just nine carries, while Caleb Lewis gained 51 yards on 15 carries.
The receiving corps was led by Aden Anderson with three catches for 31 yards.
The Elks played a flawless game penalty-wise, receiving no flags. They also did not turn the ball over or even have the ball hit the ground on a fumble against a defense that has forced 16 turnovers (6 interceptions, 10 fumbles).
"We saw a lot of really good things tonight, and it gave our team a hell of a boost as we move forward," McElroy said. "We're going to be just fine, and we're going to get back on a roll."
The Elks host Everman (1-5, 1-3) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Burleson ISD Stadium.
