To ensure students are able to get into their homes and not stuck outside in the cold weather, parents must follow the directive below from Clarkston Schools Transportation Department.

The parent/caregiver is responsible to inform their child of an alternative location to go to if the parent/caregiver is not at home at the time of the bus drop off. Parents/caregivers must be available for students anytime after school is dismissed.

The office will communicate with PKE famiies via E-blasts and text messages (using REMIND) if buses are running late due to bad weather conditions. If you have not signed up to receive text messages from PKE, please contact the main office for instructions.

Should severe conditions occur after classes are in session, our general policy will be to keep bus students in their building until we can safely operate the buses. Students will be released only to their parents, to approved adults, or by phone parental authorization.


School closings for snow, chill and ice days will be announced on the following channels or websites:

An automated phone message will call the main number which is listed on your child's emergency contacts in PARENT VUE/Synergy. Please make sure the emergency phone numbers are correct on Synergy. The office will also communicate closings via test message system (using REMIND). If Clarkston Community Schools or Pine Knob Elementary is not listed, then school will be in session.


Please be sure to dress your child appropriately for recess with a winter coat, hat, gloves, boots and snow pants. If you do not have these items please contact the main office (we may have extra winter items donated to PKE for use). We ask that if your child has borrowed a winter item please return them after use. Students will only stay indoors for recess when the temperature dips below zero degrees. Thank you.

Please Don't Spread Your Illness!

Just a few reminders for the cold and flu season:

  • If your child is ill, please keep them home.
  • If your child is running a fever, their temperature must be normal (98.6 degrees) for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Please do not send medication to school. Staff cannot (by state law) dispense medication without a form signed by your doctor. This includes over the counter medication (ointments, cough drops, Tylenol, etc.)
  • A doctor's note is required if your child has to stay indoors for recess.
  • Please discuss proper hand washing with your child and they they should not share food or drinks with others.
  • Please sneeze or cough into your elbow or tissue.

If your child is absent due to illness, please contact the PKE attendance line at (248) 623-3990. Thank you for your support in keeping PKE healthy!

Our Academic Service Learning project was a huge success!

Thank you to all the families that donated money to our penny drive or purchased ornaments. We were able to raise more than $2000 to help O.A.T.S! Part of the money we raised will benefit our special education students in our building by sending them to O.A.T.S for a day! The remainder of the money will help fund the non-profit organization that helps people of all ages and disabilities.

Pizza Kit Fundraiser

Thank you to the families who purchased Little Caesars' pizza kits. Thank you to Lolita Benson for sorting the kits upon delivery. Keep your eyes peeled for the next PKE Pizza Kit Fundraiser this spring!

Come and join us for a fun evening of Bingo on Friday, January 22 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the PKE Cafeteria.

All students who would like to play like to play bingo must bring an unwrapped prize ($5 value) for the prize table. When students win they will select a prize! Hope you can join us!

4th grade students learn more from Professional Snowboarder Barrett Christy!

Students from Mrs. Kumon's 4th grade class participated in a podcast to ask questions and learn more from Professional Snowboarder Barrett Christy as they begin to think about designing snowboards in Mrs. Sebring-Schneider's Art Class.

PKE Broadcast News - January 2016

PKE has a live news broadcast Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. Six fifth grade students from the three fifth grade classrooms produce the show. The students that comprise the team for January and February are:

P.A.W.S. (Physical Activity with Spirit)

This program will help promote and educate living a healthy lifestyle. Students will be participating in a variety of fitness and sports related activities. Some of the activities will include: Mileage Club, Fitness Trail, Relay Races, Rock Wall, Fitness Games, PACER Test, Floor Hockey, Soccer, Basketball, Fitness Stations, and Tag Games. Parents, if your student needs a snack at the end of the school day, please send one with them. PAWS T-shirt is included. Please include T-shirt size when you register.

Student Technology Showcase at Lansing's Capitol

The student technology showcase in Lansing was a great experience for Violet Bergman and Camden Williamson, 4th grade Coding Club Students from Pine Knob Elementary. Besides showing off their projects and representing Clarkston Community Schools, they were introduced in the house of representatives by our very own Jim Tedder. Do you have a future student athlete in your household?

If so, you may want to consider changing the date of when they usually get their yearly physicals. Per Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) guidelines, student athletes need to have a physical on file that's dated on or after April 15th every year. For example, all student athletes participating next year in the 2016 - 2017 school year will need to have a physical dated on or after April 15th, 2016. Please keep this in mind if your son(s) and/or daughter(s) will be participating in one of our various athletic programs, grades 7 through 12.
