Our Weekly Update
From Fourth Grade
Week of February 19th
Thank you for all of the school supplies and Valentine's Day treats! We had a wonderful day and hope you did, too! Don't forget there is no school this Monday, February 19th in celebration of President's Day. Enjoy the long weekend!
As you know, the flu epidemic is affecting tons of people, as well as the stomach bug, cold, etc. We are doing the best we can to sanitize our hands, desks, chairs, and materials in our classrooms. We ask that you please make sure you do not send your child to school until they have been fever/symptom-free for 24 hours. This helps teachers and other students stay healthy through this flu season.
The fourth grade team asks that if you have a concern or question about academics, your child, another student, etc., please contact your child's teacher first. If we cannot help solve the conflict, we will be sure to reach out to the correct administrator that can help.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are going to finish up our Westward Expansion unit by doing a DBQ again. We will look at essays, primary source documents, and other information to answer a question and write a journal entry as if we lived during the Gold Rush.
SCIENCE: Thank you to all of the parent volunteers that helped out in science lab last week. It was blast and we learned a lot that will help us out in the next unit: Simple Machines and Forces & Motion.
READING WORKSHOP
We have started a new unit called Author's Study this week, and students will be reading books by the same author. Students will compare and contrast story elements across books by by their author with an emphasis on determining theme. We are excited to meet with other students reading books by the same author to discuss our findings!
WRITING WORKSHOP
We have started a new unit in writing! Students will be writing a literary essay based on a mentor text, Fly Away Home. Students have developed a thesis statement and are in the process of finding reasons and evidence to support their claims.
Grammar Workshop
Lessons are taught weekly at school, and students will be responsible for completing the corresponding workbook pages for homework. Assignments will be due on Friday and will be checked directly from the workbook, so please keep all pages intact. Students should bring their grammar workbooks to and from school daily. Thank you to our amazing PTO for making this possible!
