Duncanville ISD Counseling Department Newsletter

December 2021

Dear Duncanville ISD Families,

In November, our focus was the Panorama survey which provided information regarding the social and emotional well-being of our students. We also celebrated college and career week in which students were able to learn about various career paths.

This month, we are spotlighting Hasting Elementary and some of the wonderful supports students are provided. There are available resources during this season, please reach out to your campus counselor if you are in need of assistance.

Sincerely,

Duncanville ISD Counseling Department

Caught Being Good

Have you ever stopped to think about how many times you react negatively to your kids in a given day?

You may find yourself criticizing far more often than complimenting. How would you feel about a boss who treated you with that much negative guidance, even

if it was well intentioned? The more effective approach is to catch kids doing something right:

"You made your bed without being asked — that's terrific!" or "I was watching you play with your sister and you were very patient.

"These statements will do more to encourage good behavior over the long run than repeated scolding's.

Make a point of finding something to praise every day. Be generous with rewards — your love, hugs, and compliments can work wonders and are often reward enough. Soon you will find you are "growing" more of the behavior you would like to see.

Holiday Tips

The holiday season is filled with many to-do lists, family gatherings, and gifts to buy, causing some to become stressed, overwhelmed and lose sight of what is meaningful to them. Try implementing a few (if not all!) of the tips below to have a more profound holiday season this year!

  1. Use the day to connect with people you care deeply about.

  2. Give a creative gift from the heart.

  3. Volunteer at a homeless shelter or food bank.

  4. Write a letter telling someone you love (or someone you need to forgive or who you’ve offended) how much you care about them and appreciate them as you wish them a happy holiday.

  5. Find an inspirational movie about the holiday and watch it with family and friends.

  6. Give the gift of living better, kinder, with more love, positivity, and compassion.
