June 7, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Westwood Families,
Congratulations to all of our students on completing the 2022-2023 school year and good luck to all of our eighth graders who move on to the high school next school year. I will see you at graduation in a short four years!
Report cards will be ready in Campus Parent Portal at the end of the day on Friday, June 9. Find instructions for accessing Campus online. Grades 7 and 8 students who received an NY (not yet) or NE (no evidence) during the school year and who have demonstrated evidence of learning we will see those updated to letter grades – A,B,C, or D. If a student received an NY or NE and has not shown progress or completed the work to demonstrate what they have learned, the grades will be updated to an F.
I hope all of our students have a great summer and are able to continue their learning this summer. Some ideas for our students are to keep a journal, read a novel, plan a trip, go on a nature walk, or plan a summer budget and keep track of your spending. Most importantly, enjoy each day.
Watch for school communications in August as we prepare to start a new school year.
Have a wonderful summer,
Tom Larson
Principal

Ready, set, read: Resources for summer reading
The school year may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean the reading has to. In addition to resources available at your public library, your student’s school-issued iPad can help support keeping the reading going this summer. Check out apps that give students access to a variety of reading materials on their iPads:
- Sora – Through the Sora app, students can check out books or magazines, including electronic books they can download and read on their iPads from the public library. This app is available in Self Service. Filters in Sora are set to public library definitions. Students in grades K-6 are set to Juvenile. Students in grades 7-12 are set to Young Adult.
- MackinVia – MackinVia is Spring Lake Park School’s digital library. Students can download the app on the iPad from Self Service and log in to check out a variety of electronic books.
More information is available about Sora and MackinVia in the technology toolkit under Student Online Resources. Neither of these apps is required and they can be removed at any time from a student’s iPad. We encourage families to work with their children – especially younger children – when choosing resources from the library.
A year of SLP Online Elementary
Spring Lake Park Schools fully online learning model for grades K-6 is just wrapping up its first full year. Core to the experience is a 3-way partnership between at-home learning coaches (usually a parent or guardian), students and learning advocates (a certified Spring Lake Park Schools teacher).
As part of his personalized learning plan, sixth grader David Huston recently learned about sea lampreys in the Great Lakes. His learning took him all the way to the Duluth aquarium. David chose the project focus and his learning was developed and supported by his at-home learning coach, mom, Tina Huston, and teacher Sue Berge.
This year of learning with SLP Schools Online Elementary has included a lot of personalized, engaging and fun projects. David, Tina and Sue meet once a week to create David’s learning plan, talk about goals and reflect on learning. They are a team that’s found its groove. Read more about the SLP Online Elementary experience.
