A Message From The Principal
Welcome to the final newsletter of the 2018-2019 school year! Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday we were welcoming our new kindergarten students for their first day at Oakdale. Today we had kindergarten round up and were able to meet our new class of kindergarten students for the upcoming year. This is an exciting time when we say goodbye to our classroom friends and another year, but we also look with anticipation to a fun-filled summer with new goals, plans, and changes for the upcoming year.
Part of those changes include staffing at Oakdale. We are sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Friesen, our Excellence in Youth Teacher. She is not leaving the district, but taking a new position as Reading Coordinator at Westbrook Elementary School. Mr. Ninemire, our PE teacher, has taken a new position with DC West Community Schools as their high school PE teacher and girls basketball coach. Mrs. Fuller, our strings teacher, has taken a classroom vocal music position at Swanson and Sunset for next year. Lastly, Mrs. Borges, one of our resource teachers, has taken a new position within Westside as one of the behavior facilitators. Although we are sad to see our colleagues leave, we are excited that they are pursuing their professional goals.
Although not all four positions have been filled yet, I am excited to announce that our new PE teacher for next year will be Tyler Wrice. Tyler will be joining us from Westside Middle School where he taught in the Academic Counseling Program. His background is in PE and he is excited to teach at Oakdale in his curricular area. Additionally, our new Excellence in Youth teacher for next year will be Katie Sindt. Katie has been with Westside for several years, most recently as one of the Personalized Learning Coordinators. We are excited to have both Tyler and Katie join us next year. Please check our summer newsletter for updates on the other two positions as we look to get them staffed.
As we come to an end to this school year, please take time with your child to praise them for all their hard work and dedication. Thank you to our awesome Community Club for all their support throughout the year. Lastly, thank you parents, for entrusting your children to our care every day of the school year. As the old adage goes, it takes a village to raise a child. I am thrilled to be part of the Oakdale village.
Have a great summer!
Mr. Jagels

"Big" News in Band!
5th and 6th grade Band and String students will present a school day concert on Thursday, May 9 at 2:40 in Oakdale's gym. While this concert is intended for the student body, parents are more than welcome to attend! We hope to see you there!
Our sixth grade jazz band students will perform as part of our District Big Band Dance on Saturday, May 11 at 5:30. This event is a fund-raiser for the Westside High School Band Booster organization and is open to the general public. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students at the door. Come on out, support the incredible band program found here in Westside, and have a great time dancing the night away!
5th and 6th grade String students will present a district wide concert called WESTFEST on Tuesday, May 14 at 7:00 pm! Please mark your calendars and help reward your child for their hard work by making this event a priority for your entire family. Students will attend a rehearsal during the school day and will need to report to Westside High School no later than 6:30.
Finally, our sixth grade band students have been working hard on learning solos and small ensemble pieces. They will present these solos during class on Monday, May 20. Parents, you are welcome and cordially invited to join us for class that day to hear the students and celebrate their accomplishments!
Students using school instruments will need to return the instrument to the school for the summer so it can be cleaned and repaired. Those instruments will be reserved for the 2019-2020 school year and will be ready for students on our first day of class.
Questions about these events or anything else band and strings related, feel free to connect with either Mrs. CJ at carpenter.gail@westside66.net or Dr. Fuller at fuller.valerie@westside66.net.

Enrollment Information
Be on the lookout this month for our Returning Student Registration process for current Westside students. Starting in mid-April, parents will be asked to login to their parent PowerSchool account and update information and permission forms for the 2019-2020 school year.
Completing these forms now will reduce—at least a little bit—the information overload parents face when school starts in August. Once you're finished, your child will be registered for the 2019-2020 school year. and we will have up-to-date contact information for back-to-school communication this summer.
Teammates Program
If you have 30 minutes each school week to give to a child, consider being a TeamMates mentor. TeamMates provides support and encouragement to students through one-to-one, school-based mentoring. The impact of a TeamMates mentor in the life of a young person is remarkable, with mentees being more hopeful and engaged and seeing improvements in their attendance, behavior, and course performance. Our Oakdale mentors have raved about how the program has given THEM so much in return. If you are interested, contact Mrs. McPadden 402-408-8880.
