Thurmont Primary School News

Back to School - August 2021

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

There is nothing quite like the feeling of going back to school. It's always been one of my favorite times of the year. I love sharpening pencils, labeling notebooks and putting everything in a new bag. Reconnecting with old friends, and meeting new ones, is always exciting. Getting back into a school routine can be good for all of us. Remembering we are an important part of a school family helps prepare us to grow our brain, heart and body power every day.

This year there is even more excitement in the air as we return all students to a fully in person learning experience. The TPS staff will remain committed to creating a sense of belonging within our classrooms and school community. We will continue to focus on making sure everyone at TPS is seen, heard, known and supported. At TPS this can mean many things. Here are just a few...

  • Seen - We will recognize and appreciate what makes each of us special and unique.
  • Heard - We will respectfully listen to one another and remember everyone has voice in their own learning.
  • Known - We will learn about and celebrate each other's strengths, needs, similarities and differences.
  • Supported - We will lead with love by asking for, receiving and offering help when needed.

Please watch your email for a special Find Out First with "Dr. Baisey's Back to School Story." This year's book has been carefully selected to remind each and every student, staff member and family member, that we need, value and appreciate YOU, just the way you are!

Yours in education,

Michele Baisey

FCPS Universal Mask Requirements

All students and staff will be required to wear face coverings inside school buildings as we start the 2021-2022 school year. Students will still be required to wear masks on school buses. Masks will not be required when outdoors.

TPS will have masks on hand to provide to students who may forget theirs or need a replacement.

Back to School Events

We are excited to offer a variety of opportunities to support students and families as we transition back into a new school year.

  • Popsicles in the Park (Thurmont Community Park New Large Pavilion) - On Friday, August 13th at 2:00pm Thurmont Elementary & Primary Schools (TEPS) invite all students and families to join staff for a cool summer treat. This informal meet and greet is designed to bring our school community together.

  • Kindergarten Orientation (Parents/Guardians Only) - On Monday, August 16th at 5:00pm parents/guardians of incoming kindergarten students are invited to TPS for an information session. Kindergarten teachers will be reviewing schedules, arrival/dismissal/lunch routines, curriculum and more!

  • Open House - On Tuesday, August 17th at 3:00pm we invite all students & their families to visit TPS, find the path to their classroom and meet their teacher. School supplies can be brought and left in the classroom.

Staffing Updates

We are excited to share additional updates to our TPS Staffing for the 2021-2022 school year!

  • Mrs. Kaitlin Fox will be joining our Kindergarten team. She comes to us from Spring Ridge Elementary School and has previous experience teaching special education pre-k, 2nd and 3rd grades. She is a member of the Thurmont community and excited to teach in the town she calls home.
  • Mrs. Samantha Creek will be joining our 2nd Grade team. She recently earned her Master's degree in Elementary Education from Frostburg State University. She has experience in FCPS serving as an SEIA at Wolfsville Elementary and student teacher at Butterfly Ridge Elementary.
  • Mrs. Lisa Gouker and Mrs. Stephanie Harrington are moving from teaching kindergarten into a shared role providing academic acceleration and support in both reading and math. We are excited for the experiences they will bring to supporting students in K-2nd Grade.

Teacher/Class Assignments

Assignment letters were mailed on Wednesday, July 28th. Information is included about your child's teacher/class, back to school events, transportation, and more. Please be sure to carefully review the letter and contact the school at 240-236-2800 with any questions.

Accompanying all letters was a blue Free and Reduced Meal Application form. We ask that a form be returned for ALL students on Tuesday, August 17th during our Open House. Even if you think you would not qualify for meal benefits, or would not plan on accessing them, your response can help our school access additional funding for materials, resources and more!

Bus Information

Bus stop information will be available on Wednesday, August 11th at https://www.fcps.org/transportation/bus-stop-information-online.

Please visit the website to look up your child's bus number and pickup/drop off times. Also, plan to confirm the times closer to the first day of school as there could be changes.

If you need support regarding transportation please call the school at 240-236-2800.

Free and Reduced Meal Applications

All families should have received a Free and Reduced Meal Benefits Application form with their child's teacher/class assignment letter. We ask for the blue form to be returned during our Open House event on Tuesday, August 17th. Even if you think you will not qualify for meal benefits, or do not plan on accessing them, the information you provide can still help our school to access funding for materials, resources, and more.
