September 1st 1939
In 1939 German forces prepared to invade the neighboring country of Poland. The leaders of Britain and France decided it was time to try to stop Hitler. Britain and France known as the Allied powers or Ally's promised to protect Poland.they warned Hitler that if he attacked it would mean war with the allies. Hitler Hitler ignored his thread on September 1,1939, German troops rushed into Poland. In response, Britain and France declared war on Germany.
Pearl Harbor
In the morning of December 7, 1941 Japanese planes bombed the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor,Hawaii.Japanese bombs sank many American warships and destroyed hundreds of American airplanes.more than 2300 American soldiers, sailors,and civilians were killed.Americans reacted with Fury to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.people who had been isolationists on December 6 were now suddenly calling for war against Japan.
Executive order 9066
In February 1942 President Roosevelt signed executive order 9066 this order allowed the military to remove the West Coast anyone seen as a threat. Japanese Americans were forced to leave their homes.they were moved into relocation camps also called internment camps around the country.a writer named Yoshiko Uchida never forgot the day the military came to take the people of her community away she said, "before long we were told to board the buses that line the street outside in the people live nearby came out of their houses to watch.by the summer of 1942 more than 110,000 Japanese-Americans were held in relocation camps. Still many Young men and women wanting to serve the country.Henry Ebihara wrote to the secretary of war asking for permission to join the military."I only ask that I be given a chance to fight preserve (protect )the principles that I had been brought up on ".by Ebihara was one of thousands of Japanese-Americans who served in the United States military.
Manhattan project
When WW2 began, Albert Einstein was one of the most famous scientists in the world. Einstein was a Jew who escaped from Germany after Hitler rose to power. Now he was living in the United States. In 1939 Einstiwn told president Roosevelt that it might be possible to build extremely powerful bombs of a new type. These atomic bombs could create massive explosive energy by splitting up atoms,the basic unit of matter. They would be far more powerful than anything ever built before. Einstein warned that German scientists were probably working on an atomic is bombs. Roosevelt knew he couldn't afford to lose the race to build an atomic bomb. In1942 the goverment started the Manhattan project. This was the code name given to the effort to build an atomic bomb. Thousands of scientists went to work at top secret labs around the country. Phillip Morrison was a young scientist who worked at a secret lab and las alamos, New Mexico. By July 1945 scientists at las alamos , New Mexico were reDy to test the worlds first atomic bomb.
Battle of Midway
Was a major turning point in the war. Japan had destroyed many American ships at Pearl Harbor. Now it hoped to destroy all of the American ships in one battle. They chose to attack Midway Island,a small island located northwest of Hawaii. In May 1942 a fleet of ships begin to move east in the Pacific Ocean. Admiral Chester Nimitz , commander of American naval forces in the Pacific,knew that Japan was planning a major attack. But he did not know where the attack would be. American code breakers told him it would happen at Midway.working from a base at Pearl Harbor the code breakers cracked Japanese codes and read secret messages sent by Japan's war planners. On June 3 American fighter planes spotted the Japanese fleet. American planes destroyed four aircraft carriers and many other ships and planes. Americans started to get territory back from Japan.
Island hopping - this was the strategies used by the allies in the Pacific Front to try and capture and liberate only the most important islands.The started with the islands farthest away from Japan and worked their way closer. The used the islands as bases. The goal was to attack Japan.
Operation Torch
Was the British American invasion of North Africa to liberate Morocco,Algeria,Tunisia, and Libya from the axis powers. It got the Mediterranean Sea back in the allies control. Then the allies were able to attack the axis via Italy.
Battle of stalingrad
Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 19421. This was the largest invasion of one country by another in the history of the world. German forces quickly fought their way toward the major cities of the Sobiet Union. One of Hitlers main goals was to capture the industrial city of Stalingrad. The soviet army fought desperately to ho.d onto Stalingrad. By the summer of 1942 the city had been completely destroyed by the guns and bombs. General Vasily Chuikov commander of Sobiet troops in Stalingrad said "The streets of the city are dead.there is not a single twig left on a tree in sight." Fighting from beyond piles and crumbled stones and bricks, Soviet soldiers battled for every inch of ground. In January 1943 the German soldiers were forced to surrender.
D- day
The allies knew they would have to invade German-controlled Western Europe. Eisenhower chose the coastal region of Normandy France.as the location for the allied invasion. On the night of June 5, an invasion force of over 175,000 soldiers and 6,000 ships sailed from Great Britain to Normand France. The date of the invasion, or invasion by se in the world history. The allied forces reached Normandy early morning of June 6. American, British, and Canadian soldiers jumped from boats and began wading up to the land. Facing deadly blasts from German guns ,allied soldiers fought their way onto the beach. The invasion cost many lives but it was a success.the allies captured the beaches of Normandy.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Truman decided to drop two atomic bombs on Japan. This would make an invasion unnecessary and save many American lives. A plane named enola gay dropped the first bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb destroyed the city and killed 80,000 in just a few seconds. A couple days later anothe bomb was dropped on Nagasaki killing about 60,000 people. After that Japan surrendered on August 4. It was called V J Day. The war was finally over
Victory in Japan Day
The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made Japan surrender. The atomic bomb killed about 200,000 people by the end of the war. It forced Japan to surrender.
