Solfege w/ Barred Instruments
Crossing Bok Chitto Social Studies/Music PD w/ Jadyn Harris
Purpose:
Solfege is a set of singing syllables used around the world, regardless of language. The syllable DO (pronounced “dough”) is generally associated with the note “C,” RE with “D,” MI with “E” and so on.
- It’s great to get children practicing singing solfege early and associating them with instrument playing as a way to write those neural pathways in their minds.
- This type of thinking can be applied across multiple approaches of learning and many subjects. Since we’ll be using this skill after reading our book, it’s good to get this practice done beforehand.
Method:
- Move to the area of the room with the xylophones, metallophones, etc.
- Carefully remove the F bars and B bars to create a pentatonic (5-tone) scale
- With Jadyn, we’ll practice singing solfege and playing the notes on the scale!
