Picture Day- FRIDAY

All students and staff will have their pictures taken this Friday, September 16. [Our Preschool class of 3-year-olds will have the option of having their picture taken on Friday, September 16, or on Thursday, November 8.]

Our picture day is an out-of-uniform day for the students. However, it is different than a dress-down day, as students should be in "business casual" attire for the day. Jeans, sweatpants, and loungewear type of clothing are examples of what not to wear. We want to maintain the appropriate academic atmosphere without clothing as much as possible. Students can wear their uniforms on picture day, which is a choice for some families every year.

Picture information was sent home. You will have the option to send in cash or a check with your child, or you can pay for pictures online, whichever is most convenient for your family. As our returning families may have noticed, we returned to the HR Imagining, the photography company we've used in previous years.

Gift Ministry

This message is a special invitation to each grade level in our school to take ownership

of at least one month throughout the school year for families to participate in the

Presentation of the Gifts during weekend Masses.

The Presentation of Gifts by the lay faithful was removed during the pandemic. We are

excited to have this opportunity again, as it has significant meaning to the liturgy. It

allows us, the laity, to bring gifts forward for consecration the same way we come

forward so that God’s grace may transform us.

We will be working with our Home and School Association to encourage families to step

in and sign-up for open opportunities each month. Keeping families together by

attending Mass each weekend sets the foundation for a life of faith and love of the Holy

Eucharist. Thank you for helping strengthen each family by participating in the holy

Mass.

For the month of September and October we are inviting our Kindergarten and First Grade families to sign up. Click the link below to reserve your spot. We really appreciate your participation and look forward to seeing you at mass!

Health Corner

Vaccines can help prevent many diseases. I ask that parents of students who are new to the school provide an updated immunization record to the school at the beginning of the school year.

Booster vaccines are sometimes required as vaccine effectiveness wears off. If you receive a request for an updated immunization record from me, please send that record in.

For more information on vaccines, follow the link: https://www.nationwidechildrens.org/conditions/health-library/childhood-immunizations .

If you have questions about vaccines, contact me at rfarthing7065@columbus.k12.oh.us .

Preschool News

The program we use for religious education is called The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. The philosophy is that even very young children have a religious life. God is present to them in their deepest being and they are capable of developing both a conscious and intimate relationship with God. I had a two week course training to have the privilege to teach this. It is dear to my heart and I believe it is an amazing way for children to encounter the Holy Trinity.

Here are some different things preschool students will be working on in the Atrium the next few weeks:

● Practical Life Work: this is the work that you would use in everyday life. The practical life
work prepares the child for other works within the atrium and includes pouring (beans,
then water, then into a funnel). This work builds up to getting the child ready to prepare
the cruets and the chalice. It includes things that will not only help them in life, but also
will help with further lessons in the Atrium.

● Liturgical Colors: includes the chasubles and the Liturgical Calendar and helps the child
to understand the liturgical seasons of the Church. This includes the preparation and
celebration of the different feasts, as well as the ordinary/ growing time and Pentecost.

● Altar work: this work begins with naming the sacred objects used at Mass. Later, we
introduce the children to the gestures work which include the Epiclesis and the Offering.
When the child is ready, he/she is shown how to prepare the water and wine into the
cruets and the chalice.

Internet Safety Presentation for Parents

  • Do you hand your child your iPad or smartphone to ‘play with’?
  • Do you understand the sexual predation risks associated with your child playing otherwise benign games like Clash of Clans or Words with Friends?
  • Do you realize that your very young children (ages 6-10) have probably already been exposed to online pornography?
  • Do you have a budding Minecraft-er or RoBlox-er at home? Did you know that these games are capable of putting your child at risk of sexual predation?
  • How about Xbox? Who is your child ‘really’ talking to on his/her headset?
  • Does your child watch YouTube? Did you know that children are consuming massive amounts of pornography and other grossly inappropriate content on YouTube?

If any of these surprised you, come and learn more at the Internet Safety for Parents

Mark your calendars for TUESDAY evening OCTOBER 4th, 7-9PM. The Home and School Association is excited to be hosting Jesse Weinberger, nationally recognized Internet Safety speaker, TEDx Presenter, host of Big Mama’s House Podcast and author of ‘The Boogeyman Exists: And He’s in Your Child’s Back Pocket.

This event is for ADULTS only. Jesse will be presenting to students (grades 4-8) prior to the adult presentation. Regardless of your child’s age, this information is invaluable to all parents and caregivers. The presentation will touch on proactive and reactive strategies of internet safety. How often have you said, “I wish I had known this sooner…”? It’s never too early to learn about internet safety and it’s never too late to learn something new that will enable our children to safely navigate the digital world.
