Welcome Back Thunderbird Families!

We hope everyone had a great first week. It was wonderful to see many familiar faces and meet new families at the Back to School Coffee on Monday. For those that don’t know us, we are Shanyn Lloyd-Gibson and Shauna Fithian, co-presidents of the Thornhill PFC (Parent Faculty Club). We are in our 2nd year of a two yearterm. We’re excited for a great year and appreciate of all the ways you, as parents, help make Thornhill one of the best schools in Oakland. Your involvement is actually a big deal!

Two major studies from the 1990s and 2000s showed the positive effect parent involvement has on student achievement and other success factors. They were so influential that researchers today still reference them frequently. A more recent study—published in 2012 by researchers at North Carolina State University, Brigham Young University, and the University of California, Irvine—reinforced these earlier studies and found that family involvement has a greater effect on positive academic performance than does the quality of the school building. And it’s not just students who are positively affected; parents, teachers, and schools as a whole also experience benefits (, 8/21/2017).

There are many ways for you to get involved at Thornhill in small and big ways. All parent involvement is valued and important from volunteering in the classroom, helping your student’s teacher with at home projects, chaperoning a field trip, serving on the PFC board, making a financial donation to support extra programs…If you’re interested in serving on the PFC Board, volunteer to help with a community event (Walkathon, Spring Carnival, Auction) please email us at We look forward to hearing from you!

We hope that you can join us at our first PFC Board Meeting on Tuesday, September 12 at 6pm in the school library. All Thornhill parents/guardians are welcome. If you need childcare (for current Thornhill students) please RSVP before the 12th. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, August 30 at Back to School Night (please note, this important event is for adults only).
