A Message from Principal Bare

Dear AHS Community,

There are so many exciting things happening in the AHS community in the next few weeks. I hope you are able to check out the amazing student talent on display at the talent show TONIGHT (Friday, December 7th) raising money to support children in need. Next Friday, come check out the Winter Fine Arts Festival, celebrating our student's amazing performing and fine arts and raising money for our fine arts programs. This is such a busy time of year, I am looking forward to taking a break to enjoy both of these events and celebrate the tremendous talent at Ashland High School. I hope to see you there!

I am also looking forward to Coffee and Donuts with 9th grade parents on the 13th. The 9th grade counselor, Keri Phipps, and I will be discussing ways to support your student and plan for the future. This is also a great opportunity to meet some fellow 9th grade parents. There is more information about this later in the newsletter.

I hope you all stay healthy and warm during this winter season.

All the best,

Erika

The attached has some tips and tricks for addressing some common scenarios you may face with your teenager. I hope you find it useful! What to Say to your Teenager about Drugs.

Sparrow Club

The Sparrow Club is an educational charity whose mission is to set the stage for simple yet heroic acts of kindness in schools and youth culture by utilizing the concept of kids helping kids in medical need. Through service and fundraising activities, individual schools are matched with a qualified local child (birth through 17 years of age) who benefits greatly from the financial & moral support of students. Perhaps more profoundly, young people experience the joy and life-long lessons of compassion, generosity, and integrity as they give of themselves for others.

Bradda Chamberlin is AHS's Sparrow Club 2018-19 Senior Project representative.

Bradda will work closely with AHS Sparrow, Ayazi, this year. This club was generously sponsored by TC Chevy Ashland OR

He is very thankful and excited to start this amazing journey with Ayazi and her family.
#sparrowclubs #thenextgeneration #seniorproject @bradda.chamberlin

Bradda is involved in Leadership, Key Club, and has attended Camp Ukandu. He also serves in various ways at Bellview Elementary School.

AHS Students can support this project by volunteering for community service projects. Each volunteer hour is converted into a financial donation by TC Chevy Ashland.

Writing and Literature Workshop

Ms. Heckman’s Writing and Literature students had the good fortune to be able to participate in a workshop with internationally published author James Anderson, author of "Lullaby Road" and "The Never Open Desert Diner." Mr. Anderson shared his writing process with students along with anecdotes of his meetings with writers such as Stephen King, and his experiences in publishing. Students participated in a group writing assignment and then were able to receive feedback from Anderson. It was a richly rewarding experience.

Senior Projects Presentations

Early Bird Senior Project presentations will be held on Wednesday, January 9th.

Spring Presentations will be held on Wednesday, May 1st.

Senior Projects are an important opportunity for AHS Seniors to explore subjects and interests in ways that challenge them and encourage them to go above and beyond anything they have done before. Senior Projects also teach students the importance of giving back to their community and sharing their knowledge and experiences with a wider audience. These projects are shared in a formal presentation setting where students have a chance to discuss not only what they accomplished but also their journey over the last four years of high school. PLEASE NOTE THAT WINTER PRESENTATIONS ARE ON THE FIRST WEDNESDAY AFTER BREAK.
