First Two Weeks of School 2nd Semester
The current plan is a two week return to yellow schedule and then going to green on January 19 after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. A link to a pdf of this schedule is below.
Extended Campus Learning Changes
There will be some changes to extended campus learning 2nd semester. This includes scaling back some course options due to the nature of the course. Courses containing a large amount of hands on work and/or mainly physical demonstration have been removed from extended campus. For example, welding and many art courses cannot be realistically carried out via an online format.
Another key change is a number of classes will have separate extended campus learner sections. In courses where extended campus enrollment is large enough to create a class section, we have made specific sections on teacher schedules catered to this format. This will assist teachers to focus instruction specifically to extended campus learners instead of trying to balance students physically in the classroom and students remotely at the same time. These specific sections are built into extended campus learner schedules.
We continue to move forward with finding improvements for all learners. These changes will continue to help us meet needs for all of our students in the current situation.
Schedules for all students will be posted online in January prior to the start of school.
Materials/Books Drop Off and Pick Up for Extended Campus Learners
Teachers will be communicating with extended campus learners regarding materials needed by January 4th at the latest. It would help with this process if extended campus students could be checking email on the morning of January 4th.
- January 4th 12 pm-5:30 pm
- January 5th 3:30 pm-5:30 pm
- January 6th 3:30 pm-5:30 pm
Students currently on extended campus returning to in person attendance for second semester can return materials to the teacher/IMC on the day the student returns to school on January 5th (A-K) or January 7th (L-Z).
School Counseling Information
The spring semester of the junior year is a great time for junior students to consider taking the ACT test. All juniors take a required ACT test during the spring of junior year for state accountability purposes. The result of this test can be used for college entrance purposes.
All Junior ACT and Sophomore Pre-ACT
- March 23, 2021 all 11th grade students will take the ACT test.
- This will be the subject area tests and writing.
- 10th grade students will take the Pre-ACT test.
- 9th and 12th grade students will not have school on March 23rd.
- This test administration is paid for by the state of Nebraska and all juniors are required to take this test.
- Juniors watch for information early in the second semester regarding an opportunity to participate in an ACT test preparation course from 3 Moms and a Test paid for by Westside Community Schools.
National ACT test dates
- Students also have opportunities to take the test additional times on Saturdays throughout the year.
- Students can register to take the test at any testing site.
- Westside will host a national test date on June 12, 2021.
- Other Omaha metro area test sites will host the ACT test on February 6, 2021, April 17, 2021, and July 17, 2021 in addition to the June test date.
- There is a fee to take a test on a national test date. If your student qualifies for free or reduced lunch, the student is eligible for a fee waiver. This can be obtained through our school counseling office.

National Honor Society Information
Junior and Senior Students
Since its inception in 1921, the National Honors Society recognizes students who seek excellence in being a well-rounded, high achieving participant in both academics and community. The four basic principles defining members of the NHS are known as the “Everyday Pillars of NHS”, and include scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Being initiated into a school’s NHS chapter speaks volumes about a student’s dedication to becoming a recognized academic and well-rounded individual that gives back to his/her society.
The following criteria are used to identify students who may qualify for National Honor Society consideration.
6.1 Mark Point Average (Not GPA) (Can be found at the top of the Grades and Attendance Page in PowerSchool for the student)
30 hours of service learning (juniors) (service hour expectations have been reduced due to COVID-19 reducing opportunities)
40 hours of service learning (seniors)(service hour expectations have been reduced due to COVID-19 reducing opportunities)
Be involved in school sponsored activities, including clubs, service groups, performance groups, and/or athletics over their a student's high school career
If students meet these requirements, they will receive an email by the end of January welcoming them to apply for membership. We will also notify parents of these students at the same time so families are aware. Students meeting the above criteria will have a month to complete and submit the application and essay. Then, a panel of faculty from different disciplines in the high school will evaluate the applications to determine the final roster for initiation.

COVID Reporting and Protocols
Key Reminders of Current Quarantine Protocols
- If a student or family member is positive for COVID, the person should be isolated for 10 days.
- If a student has close contact with a COVID positive person, the quarantine period can be 10 days. Self Monitoring and mask wearing should occur through day 14 after the exposure.
- Quarantine can be shortened with a test. The test should not be done until the 5th day after exposure. A negative test on the 5th day or after enables a person to leave quarantine on the 8th day after exposure. The person should continue self-monitoring through day 14 after exposure.
- Even during break, please continue to inform our Student Services team of any positive COVID-19 and/or quarantine situations impacting your student. This information will help us make decisions and keep our community safe.
