Characterization (Direct/Indirect) : The process of revealing the personality of a character
Example: John had a bad attitude but he was normally a nice person.
Protagonist : The main Character
Example: Harry potter was the protagonist in the harry potter book series.
Antagonist: The person or thing that gets in the way of the main character
Example: Voldemort is always trying to kill or stop Harry.
Flat Character: A simple character who does not display internal conflicts
Example: In the film " Harry potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" the character Filch is only mentioned once and then you learn nothing else about him.
Round Character: A complex character who displays internal conflicts.
Example: Shay is a round character because she displays internal conflicts about turning pretty and trusting Tally throughout the book.
Static Character: A character who stays the same throughout the story.
Example:Pumba from the lion king is a static character
Dynamic Character: A character who changes throughout a story
Example: In the book Uglies Tally changes her feelings and opinions on her society.
Internal Conflict: A conflict that takes place within a characters mind.
Example: In the book Uglies, Tally suffers internal conflict when she couldn't decide wether to go to the smoke or not.
External Conflict: A struggle that takes place outside of a character.
Example: arguing
Diction: Word choice
Example: Saying cat lady instead of cat woman.
Denotation: The dictionary definition of a word.
Example: Telling someone they are a dog is taken literal.
Connotation: All of the emotional associations and societal assumptions connected with a word
Example: Telling someone they are a dog is taken as they are ugly and/or morally detestable.
First person point of view: The vantage point from which a story is told by one character- uses I
Example: The fault in our stars
Third person limited point of view: A story is told by a narrator who reveals thoughts of one character
Example: Charlottes web is third person limited
Third person omniscient point of view: The vantage point form which a story is told by an all knowing narrator .
Example: The book bridge to Terabithia
Situational irony: When you expect one thing to happen and then the opposite happens.
Example:Seeing a fire on a fire hydrant
Verbal irony: When you say one thing but mean the opposite
Example:Adam telling eve that she is the most beautiful woman he's ever seen.
Dramatic Irony: When the reader or audience knows something a character doesn't know
Example: If someone were to say on the titanic "it's so beautiful i could just die" right before it hit an iceberg.
Symbol: Something that represents more than just itself
Examples: In the wizard of oz dorthy's red slippers are a symbol of the power she had the whole time.
