Grade 5
September 14th-18th
Reminders
Back to School Night is 23rd September, from 5:30 - 7pm. This is an opportunity to meet the Grade 5 teachers and learn more about the Grade 5 program.
Please sign your child's communication book each week.
Students are encouraged to bring an extra t-shirt on Monday and Wednesday so that they can change after P.E. and on Thursday for those students who do Health and Fitness. Please remind your child to write their name in their P.E. shirt and also on items such as pencil cases, lunch bags, water bottles, and pencils and pens that they bring to school.
Unit Of Inquiry
This week we recapped the central idea and lines of inquiry and looked at which concepts relate to this.
Each student completed a multiple intelligence test which they would have shared with you for homework. With this test they were able to see which learning style they were strongest and weakest at. This was part of "understanding ourselves as individuals".
As a class we looked at what a respectful and responsible person would look like. The students came up with a list of words such as kind, responsible, caring, open-minded etc. With those words they then came up with adjectives to describe each of them.
Students created a class list of what it means to be responsible and rated each criteria in order of importance. They then used this list to individually assess each criteria to see if they always do it, usually do it, sometimes do it or never do it. This list will hopefully help each student work on areas of improvement over the course of the year.
Writing
This week we introduced autobiographies. We looked at samples of different autobiographies and discussed the organization of an autobiography. We also looked at the use of language conventions such as paragraphs, first person etc.
Maths
Music
The Grade 5 students are exploring who they are as individuals in performing arts. This includes their experiences, influences, preferences etc.
With this information they will create a board that will help them consider the individuality of everyone with the theme of 'you can't judge a book by its cover'.
Mr Shadbolt's Challenge
This week at Primary Assembly Mr. Shadbolt gave the students two challenges. The first challenge is to create a song, poem or rap on respect for self and others. The second challenge is to think of two positive actions to take in the next two weeks.
The students have been encouraged to take on this challenge and see what they can come up with to present to Mr. Shadbolt.
