Three Universitywide Events | New Brunswick, Newark, Camden
February-March, 2018
The Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs will host three networking receptions this Spring semester - open to all Rutgers faculty and postdocs. Enjoy an afternoon of informal networking and camaraderie, with colleagues from across the University. The events aim to:
- provide a venue for the Rutgers faculty and postdoc communities to network with colleagues,
- facilitate connections with peers from across disciplines, schools and campuses, and
- encourage collaborations that accelerate career and academic development - including inter/intra-disciplinary collaborations for teaching, research, and mentoring.

The Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is proud to sponsor this workshop on Improvisational Techniques for Effective Communication. This is a professional development workshop open to junior faculty (assistant professor, instructor) and postdocs in science-related disciplines. This is an interactive workshop where you'll learn creative techniques for communicating your research to diverse audiences, and ultimately become a better communicator.

Only 3 spots available! | iJOBS SciPhD Workshop: Leadership and Business Skills for Scientists
This is a 4 day (35 hr) workshop. You only need to register once, however, all 4 sessions are required.
SciPhD is run by Human Workflows, LLC (http://sciphd.com/) and helps trainees assess their current skill set, express it in business-friendly language as well as recognize/fill skill gaps in areas such as communication, leadership, team building, negotiation and project management.
This workshop focuses on 24 essential core competencies valued by industry and business, relates those competencies to activities and behaviors commonly experienced by academic scientists through the scientific method, and demonstrates how those competencies work together to form the operational competencies that are essential in business. These transition business competencies can also be applied by academic and government scientists in running their laboratories.
SciPhD is a very interactive and hands-on exposure to these concepts with real action items to take away from the workshop. Throughout the program, students and postdocs will experience at least four behavioral-based interview experiences in which they will play the role of the candidate and the interviewer.

NYU School of Medicine Postdoctoral Affairs (the organizers of What Can You Be With A PhD? WCUB 2017) is hosting our first annual Find Your MedComm Calling: Medical Writing & Communications Speed Networking on Thursday, March 29th from 6-8pm for all graduate students and postdocs in the greater NYC area! This event is supported by our fellow career development programs and offices at Columbia, CUNY, Einstein, Rutgers, and Yale.
If you're thinking about applying for medical communications positions, this event is for you!
RSVP is required as spots are limited.
Graduate students and postdocs will get a chance to meet the representatives of regional medical communications agencies in a speed networking fashion. You'll will be able to learn about each company's mission, their areas of MedComm, work environment, and positions open for their company. Afterwards, you can continue making your connections at our networking reception hosted by our sponsors. Check out our website to see a list of the participating medical communication agencies.
While this event is open for all, the ideal participants for this event would be senior PhD graduate students and postdocs who are seriously considering a career in medical communications immediately to the next 6 months.
In order to prepare the attendees for the event, Christina Hughes, VP of Medical and Scientific Affairs for Medical Exchange International and Sloka Iyengar, Healthcare Consultant for Boston Strategic Partners will host two live webinars prior to MedComm Speed Networking. The first webinar introduces the career path broadly and the different areas of medical communication PhDs can work in. The second will prepare you for the speed networking event. It will also focus on how to tailor a resume for medical communications and the interview process, including the writing test that interviewees have to complete.

Teams of postdocs, graduate students and faculty interested in entrepreneurship are invited to apply.
Dear Rutgers Innovators,
We are actively recruiting STEM-based teams with University-owned and student-owned innovations from all campuses across Rutgers. Teams must include an Entrepreneurial Lead (typically a student) and at least one other member, either an Academic Lead (typically a faculty member) or a Business Mentor (industry expert). The goal is to help teams explore technology commercialization pathways for their technologies. Teams will receive up to $2500 for reimbursable expenses related to Customer Discovery.
We invite your team to apply for our first upcoming cohort during the Spring semester 2018 using the online application (http://go.rutgers.edu/9nqao6mb). If accepted, we expect your full participation in the lectures, customer discovery interviews, and delivery of short team presentations for the duration of the cohort. During the 4-session program (see dates below), classroom instruction time will focus on Steve Blank’s Lean Startup methodologies and Alex Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas, along with short class presentations. Teams are expected to conduct 20+ customer interviews during the 5-week period with weekly presentations of their findings and their future plans.
Through class lectures, videos, and evidence-based entrepreneurship, we will support your team in identifying the value of your research to potential customers in the real world, to help you craft a plan forward.
The following dates for this upcoming Spring 2018 cohort on the New Brunswick Campus are:
- Tuesday, February 27 9am – 1pm
- Tuesday, March 6 9am – 1pm
- Tuesday, March 20 9am – 1pm

If the timing of this 1st Cohort does not fit your schedule, please be aware that Rutgers will have multiple cohorts over the 5-year grant period with a goal of assisting 30 teams per year.
By participating in the Rutgers I-Corps Site Program, you become part of the National Innovation Network and position your team for more commercialization success with eligibility for the NSF I-Corps National program, SBIR/STTR Awards, or additional follow-on funding from incubators or investors.
For those who apply to Rutgers I-Corps Site, but are not accepted in this upcoming cohort, please review our feedback and re-apply for future cohorts.
