Stone Soup Evening

Join us for an evening of conversation and community-building at our 1st Annual Stone Soup Supper on Friday, November 18th from 5pm-7pm to benefit the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry.
Arbor View’s Inside Out Club will be performing a short skit before we all sit down together for a reading and a bowl of Stone Soup. A representative from the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry will be giving a short talk on hunger, food insecurity and the community they serve. Students will have an opportunity to pack personal items bags, sign up to volunteer, and browse new best sellers and classics at the Book Fair.
Families are encouraged to RSVP: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508054cacae2ca0f85-stone

Art Smart
There were many innovative and mouth-watering burgers created this past month! “Two Cheeseburgers, with Everything” was a hit with the students. Some students chose the typical burger toppings such as cheese, ketchup, lettuce, and tomatoes while others chose to top their burgers with candy, chips, and even cherries! We hope you were able to see some of the amazing burgers displayed in the vestibule and lobby last month. Thank you to all the students who participated. Enjoy your adorable stacking cat pencil prize. Below are the winners for October. Congratulations to all the winners!

No online learning on ‘snow days’ this school year
When school buildings need to close due to extreme weather (such as heavy snow), CCSD 89 will not be providing online learning this school year. If a snow day is necessary, schools will be closed and the day will be added to the end of the school year. This change is a result of feedback from parent groups.
At this time, the last day of school is scheduled to be a half-day on Thursday, May 25. The district builds five emergency days into the school calendar. If all five emergency days are used, the last day of this school year would be Friday, June 2.
If a snow day is called, information will be released through a phone message, as well as the district’s website (www.ccsd89.org), Facebook page (facebook.com/CCSD89), and Twitter account (@CCSD89). The district’s messaging system uses contact info supplied by guardians.
Even when school is open, students should dress for the cold. Students will continue to go outside for recess as long as the weather remains above 10 degrees.

FirstView app helps families keep up with bus travel
Many CCSD 89 families will now be able to track their student’s bus trips to and from school through a free busing app. Parents can download the FirstView app. The app can show an estimated number of minutes until the bus arrive at bus stops, and when buses arrive at school. Learn more: www.ccsd89.org/busapp
Families may be charged for damage to district technology devices
Families should have a conversation at home about the importance of appropriately using the district's technology devices (as outlined in the district’s Acceptable Use Policy.) Appropriate use includes: carrying the device carefully, keeping liquids away from devices, and not leaving devices in areas with extreme heat or cold. When a district device (such as an iPad or Chromebook) is damaged or lost due to negligence or misuse, the repair or replacement will be the family’s responsibility. A list of charges is available at: https://www.ccsd89.org/techdamage
Reminder: Phones, smartwatches should be off and out of sight at school
Students have been receiving or sending messages from family members and friends during the school day. These messages disrupt the learning environment for your child, their classmates, and the teacher. If you need to reach your child during the day, please contact the main office.
Cell phones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices must be kept out of sight in a backpack, purse, or locker during the school day. If a student violates these rules, the device will be confiscated and there may be disciplinary action.
Please have a conversation at home about the appropriate use of technology at school and why it is important that all students are able to focus on their learning.
More information is available on page 44 of the Student/Parent Handbook, CCSD 89 Board of Education Policy 7:192 – Student Use of Mobile Telecommunication Devices, and Board Regulation 7:192-R.

Keep your student home if they test positive for COVID-19
Families should keep students home if they have tested positive for COVID-19. This chart can be a starting point when determining whether your student needs to stay home: https://bit.ly/3Pvf8C6
When you use an at-home COVID-19 test, please take a photo of the test strip that shows the results so you can share it with the school nurse. Reminder: The district will track cases but will no longer send weekly notices.
