Mrs. Grainger's Class Updates

March 14, 2016

What's happening in our classroom?

Spring Break is almost here and we are busy, busy, busy in the classroom! Here's what we have been studying lately....

Reading: Over the past few weeks we have been reading informational text during whole group reading time and trying to determine the main idea of a paragraph or of an entire text. Students have learned how to find the main idea and how to support it using key details from the text. Ask your child what they learned about Emperor penguins and Antarctica.

Writing: We have just recently finished our opinion writing unit. Tomorrow students will be taking home a letter they wrote trying to convince you to allow them to have their "dream pet". They had a lot of fun with this unit and they really wanted to show you their letter! This week, we have started a new unit on "expert" writing. Students will pick a topic that they believe they are an expert in and make a short informational book with chapters to teach someone about their topic. I can't wait to see what topics they pick!

Math: This week we are taking our end of unit assessments for our fraction unit. Students are still continuing to practice multiplication facts at school. Multiplication is a very important part of the beginning of 4th grade. Students must be fluent in their facts before they get to 4th grade as they will be doing two-digit by two-digit multiplication. Please continue to review these at home. Our next unit will focus on data and graphs.

Science: Has your child been coming home and talking about what they have been learning about the human body? We have been learning about the important bones in our body, skin, joints and muscles. Ask them how many bones there are in an adult human skeleton.
