Principal's Update
What a great week to be a Hornet! We had a great first week back from break and are ready to dig in for the second half of the school year. The 2nd Quarter ends for 4th - 8th graders ends next Thursday. Students in 6th-8th grade will begin their new exploratory classes on January 16th.
Next week our 4th-grade class will participate in the Symphony Safari at the Monument on January 10. The concert will start at 9:30 and last about an hour. We will be leaving around 8:30 and arriving back around 11:15. The students will eat regular lunch when they return. Next week Thursday is also our developmental screening. If you have a 3 to 5 year-old who is not enrolled in kindergarten and would like to have them screened, please call the office to set up a time.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

We are starting the New Year off with our new Character Counts trait: Responsibility. Character Counts defines responsibility as
- Doing what you are supposed to do and always trying your best
- Persevere--keep trying and don't give up
- Use self-discipline
- Thinking before you act and be aware of the consequences
- Be accountable for your words, actions and attitudes
Students discussed the various responsibilities they have at school (following the rules, getting their work done and turning it in, etc) and at home (chores, taking care of animals, helping out, etc).
What responsibilities does your child have at home?
In the Elementary, we are learning more about emotions for classroom guidance lessons. Junior Kindergarten and Second grade are learning about different emotions, how we show them and what might make us feel certain ways. Third grade is learning why we have emotions which is a survival instinct to help keep us safe and be aware of our needs. Fifth grade began exploring how minor changes we make can help alleviate big feelings like stress. In Sixth grade, we began our Bullying Unit with Second Step and learned about three types of bullying (verbal, relational/social, and physical).
Everyone seems a little tired after the first week back--make sure to schedule time for rest and fun to help keep your child refreshed for school!
