5th Grade News

Week of December 7 - 11

Welcome to Mrs. Riddle and Mrs. Waggoner's Weekly Newsletter! Here, you will find our learning targets for the week, along with upcoming events/reminders.

Learning Targets

Reading and Social Studies - We are currently reading The Sign of the Beaver as we study Indian Civilizations. Also, as we read, we are focusing on the point of view of our main characters: Matt and Attean. Students will also be using inference skills as we try to think on a deeper level about what our characters are thinking. Later in the week, we will work on our timelines.

A.R. Requirement for the 2nd quarter: Students must read 2 books on his/her level with an 80% accuracy on the Accelerated Reader Quiz - DUE DECEMBER 15th

Achieve 3000 - Students do NOT have a homework article this week. One article will be done in class with Mrs. Waggoner and another article will be done in class with Mrs. Riddle. Both articles related to ecosystems.

Writing - Most students have finished their "Where I'm From" poems. We are working on our new narratives, looking to wrap them up by the time we leave for Winter Break.

Math - In math, we will have an Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators quiz on Friday, December 11th. We are also working with improper fractions and mixed numbers this week.

PLEASE, encourage your children to practice their math facts EVERY DAY. Even if it is only for a few minutes. Also, MobyMax login and password information can be found in your child's B.E.E. Binder for their required 15 minutes nightly (or 60 minutes/week).

Science - In science we are learning how humans and animals can impact and change ecosystems. We have also been observing our changing biodomes. We will have a test soon over “ecosystems” - study guide to come!
