Add+VantageMR (AVMR) Course 2 is a 4-day course that includes dynamic, diagnostic,individual assessments in place value, multi-digit addition & subtraction, multiplication & division strategies. The assessment, organizational and teach tools accelerate the educator's ability to recognize the students' current levels of numeracy understanding to make data-driven instructional decisions. AVMR Course 2 is most appropriate for Kindergarten through elementary classroom and special education teachers, as well interventionalists who work with children Kindergarten through middle school.

Add+VantageMR (AVMR) Course 1 is a 4-day course that includes dynamic, diagnostic,individual assessments in number words and numerals, structuring numbers and addition and subtraction strategies. The assessment, data collecting, and teaching tools accelerate the educator's ability to recognize the students current levels of numeracy understanding to make data-driven instructional decisions. AVMR is beneficial for anyone working or supervising others in the area of mathematics. It is most appropriate for pre-Kindergarten through elementary, as well as for middle school educators who work with students that have fallen at least two years behind standards. AVMR Course 1 is a pre-requisite for AVMR Course 2.

Cognitive Coaching

In this seminar, participants learn ways to expand and refine knowledge and skills to promote more effective teaching and learning. The focus is on strategies that enhance teachers’ intellectual growth and strengthen instructional decision-making. During the workshop the maps and tools of Cognitive Coaching℠ are demonstrated and practiced. Specifically, participants learn to: develop trust and rapport develop an identity as a mediator of thinking utilize conversation structures for planning, reflecting and problem resolving develop teachers’ autonomy and sense of community develop higher levels of efficacy, consciousness, craftsmanship, flexibility and interdependence apply four support functions: coaching, evaluating, consulting, collaborating utilize the coaching tools of pausing, paraphrasing, and posing questions distinguish among the five forms of feedback use data to mediate thinking.

Hollywood or History? Engaging Students with US History

Teaching and learning through Hollywood movies is anything but a new approach and has been something of a mainstay in the classroom for nearly a century. However, purposeful and effective instruction through film is not problem-free and there are many challenges that accompany classroom applications of Hollywood motion pictures. In response to the problems and possibilities associated with teaching through film, Dr. Scott L. Roberts of Central Michigan University has developed a collection of practical, classroom-ready lesson ideas that might bridge gaps between theory and practice and assist teachers endeavoring to make effective use of film in their classrooms based on a inquiry-focused strategy called Hollywood or History?

Kindergarten Readiness Assessment: Teacher Certification

In the fall of 2019, all Genesee County Schools will begin using the KRA in all Kindergarten, Developmental Kindergarten, Young 5’s or any other early kindergarten programs. The assessment measures school readiness of incoming kindergarteners across four domains: Language and Literacy, Social Foundations, Mathematics, and Physical Well-Being and Motor Development. It is administered over the first few months of school, ending by October 31.

The Economics of Enterpreneurship

This workshop will cover economics and entrepreneurship for grades 3-5. Lessons are aligned to State of Michigan Social Studies content standards, integrating with science, reading, and language arts. Participants will have the opportunity to work through the curriculum that provides lessons incorporating economics principles with the fundamentals of creating a business. The entrepreneurial mindset will be developed using various activities. The curriculum can also be used in preparation for market day activities.
