Swansboro Elementary

Hello Pirate Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Tomorrow we will resume school for all students. We will continue with face to face instruction for all students M, T, TH and F. Wednesday will continue to be remote for all students through March.

Please make sure that you are following the most recent OCS calendar. You can find it in our newsletter (below).

As Valentine's Day approaches, we have determined the following protocols and restrictions for Valentine's Day this year:

  • Students will be permitted to exchange paper valentines. These valentines MAY NOT CONTAIN ANY FOOD OR CANDY. There are no exceptions to this. Paper valentines my include stickers or like items.
  • Students will not be permitted to give treat bags of any type to other students.
  • All students will have a brown sandwich bag for their valentines to be placed in. The school will purchase these bags and have them to teachers the week prior, to allow time for students to decorate the bags.
  • Bags should be placed on a table or counter and students will go one-at-a-time to put valentines in bags. This will help with social distancing guidelines.
  • When they are finished, teacher or teacher assistant should staple the bag closed. The bag should go home in the students' bookbags, to be opened at parents' discretion.
  • If parents do not wish for their child to participate, they will need to let their teacher know.
  • Due to Covid restrictions, we are not allowing food/craft donations to be brought into the school except through teacher Amazon wish lists.
  • Thank you for following these protocols in order to keep our students safe.

Please help us expedite our morning screenings by turning your heat down. This will help ensure accurate temperature checks. Also, if you arrive at SBES and find that the car pool line is backed up all the way to the highway, please pull over and wait a few minutes in one of the nearby businesses for the line to go down. Do not stop on the highway as this is dangerous and you may also receive a ticket. If you find the lanes are often back up to the highway, I suggest that you come around 3:15 and you should not have to wait very long at all.

As always, we ask that if you or anyone in your household have any Covid symptoms, exposure or concerns, please reach out to the school. Each case is unique and will require you to speak with Nurse Sammons or Ms. Highsmith to ensure student safety and adherence to OCS policies. We will be glad to assist you through this process and appreciate your willingness to keep us informed regarding our students' health and safety. Thank you for everyone's continued support and patience.

Reminder about car seat safety:

Please make sure that you are keeping your child safe and adhering to the NC state laws regarding car seats. Here is a website with a summary of seatbelt laws for children: https://www.buckleupnc.org/occupant-restraint-laws/child-passenger-safety-law-summary/. If you fail to comply with the law, you may receive a ticket from our SRO.

Note from Nurse Sammons:

If you OR your child has a fever of over 100, a new cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell or you are being quarantined per medical advice or are being Covid tested per medical request PLEASE email the Nurse or call the school. We must clear your child per OCS protocol before they return on the bus or return to in person school. Nurse Sammons email is Mollie.Sammons@onslow.k12.nc.us. For more information, please check out Nurse Sammons' webpage on our school's website.
