Formative Assessment & Progress Monitoring for English Learners
Workshop Description:
In this exciting new workshop, participants will examine different forms of Assessment for English Learners including: formative, summative, and progress monitoring. Specific assessment tools and student examples will be shared. The WIDA MODEL kit will be demonstrated.
Audience:
All educators of ELs including general education classroom teachers, ESL teachers, ESL paraprofessionals, instructional coaches, and administrators

English Learners: Difference or Disability?
Workshop Description:
Participants will examine tools and strategies to learn how to determine if an English Learner has second language acquisition issues or other learning issues. The presenters will explain reasons for over- and under- identification of learning disabilities among English Learners. The acculturation process and characteristics of learning disabilities will be discussed. Steps that teachers of English Learners should take throughout the pre-referral process will outlined. Specific tools for analysis of English Learner data will be shared.

All educators of ELs including general education classroom teachers, ESL teachers, ESL paraprofessionals, instructional coaches, and administrators

Developing a District Protocol Related to English Learners and Special Education
Workshop Description:
Identifying and placing culturally and linguistically diverse students in special education is a challenging issue in all Oakland County schools. This workshop is designed for teams of ESL and Special Education professionals who want to develop a district protocol detailing procedures used when an English learner is having learning difficulties.
Audience:
Attendance as a multidisciplinary school or district team is strongly encouraged since considerable time will be dedicated to guided team action planning and protocol development.
Teams who have not attended the workshop before should register for December 12th, 2016.
OR
Teams who participated in this workshop during the 2015/2016 school year and wish to have more structured time to work together as a team to refine their protocol or work through case studies as a team should register for October 6th, 2016.
Developing Academic Language Proficiency in English Learners Cohort
The Developing Academic Language Proficiency in English Learners Cohort has been designed as an in depth, year-long collaborative opportunity for school and/or district teams of general education and ESL educators. Educators will participate in one full day and three evenings of deep learning about academic language proficiency and English Learners. For inclusion in the cohort, we seek to attract passionate educators interested in collaborating to make their curriculum, instruction, and assessment more accessible and responsive to the unique needs of English Learners.
Requirements
Team Requirements:
- District and/or school teams of at least 2 educators
- At least ONE must be an ESL teacher
- At least ONE must be a general education teacher of English Learners
- Special educators are invited to participate with teams
Participation Requirements
Full day Meeting:
Saturday, October 22nd, 2016: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (full day attendance is required)
Evening Meetings:
Dates: Thursday, November 10th, Thursday, February 23rd, and Thursday, April 20th
Time: 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

ESL Focus Groups
WHAT ARE FOCUS GROUPS?
Join us at Oakland Schools for a morning of coffee and conversation with your ESL colleagues. You will have the opportunity to network before the formal sessions and at the break. Each of the four structured focus groups will have a facilitator to lead a group discussion on a specified topic. The facilitator will propose several questions related to the topic. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and participate in the discussion. We will also have dedicated spaces for "unconference" sessions. Literacy Across the Curriculum for English Learners (year long cohort) with Jeanine Clever
Content Objectives:
By the end of the year, teachers will be able to:
- Identify the fundementals underlying the similarities and differences in teaching reading to English proficient/native-English Speakers and English Learners
- Describe how the nature of reading and the components identified by the National Reading Panal and the National Literacy Panal apply to teaching and learning of reading to English learners
- Use reading and writing strategies for teaching English learners at a variety of proficiency levels, reading levels, first language levels, ages, and language and cultural backgrounds
Language Objectives:
By the end of the year, teachers will be able to:
- Express orally or in writing the similarities and differences in learning to read for proficient/native-English speakers and English learners
- Indicate comprehension of instructional adaptations for the teaching and reading of English learners participating in activities and creating units of study for your class
- Use academic language and professional vocabulary from the fields of ESL and reading
Benefits to Participants:
- Participants will learn how to carefully observe, plan and provide ongoing instructional support for English Learners and other struggling students
- Participants will discover learning strategies to help English Learners access the Common Core Standards through use of Model Performance Indicators as well as ideas for scaffolding in all content areas
Audience:
We are looking for school and district teams of 3-5 educators comprised of the following:
- one ESL teacher
- at least one general education teacher K-6
- special educators can participate with their team
- administrator

Book Study: Seven Steps to Separating Difference From Disability

This miPLACE Collaboratorium group is designed for educators who seek to learn more about how to determine if an English Learner has second language acquisition issues or other learning issues. The purpose of this group is to encourage educators or teams of educators to collaboratively and purposefully study the book Seven Steps to Separating Difference From Disability by Dr. Catherine Collier.
How to Join the Group
