Rollout!

I would like to congratulate Yolanda, Jodie, & the 4th/5th grade teams for a very successful and smooth iPad Rollout! Our 3 5th grade Techie Interns did a great job of managing the crowds and keeping things moving.

I'm so proud of how our learners are already leveraging these devices. Let me share one example... Today in May's class (1 day post Rollout), learners were using their devices to complete a Google Form providing different real world examples of things you would measure in different units (i.e. liters & meters). When I asked a few what they would do if they couldn't remember how long a kilometer was, they showed me several different ways to use their device and access a variety of resources (May's SMORE Metric Chart, Blendspace graphics/videos, etc). I can't wait to see how these learners (& educators) will use these devices!

While this 1-to-1 initiative will have the biggest impact on 4th/5th, it was also affect K-3. All of our newly arrived matching funds devices and any shared iPads currently in 4th/5th will "roll" down. Yolanda, Jodie, and I will be working on a plan for this switch.

Curriculum Design

1st Grade PBL Feature

First Grade is really proud of their 2nd PBL that was done in November. We learned from our first PBL that it isn’t very successful when you try and cram as many TEKS as you can into your PBL. At this particular time, we were learning about money, as well as needs and wants in Social Studies. Being first grade, we LOVE thematic units. Thanksgiving was around the corner and the kids loved learning about the Mayflower. We dressed the part and created pilgrim hats and bonnets to wear each day we worked on our PBL. (TOO CUTE!) Students were put into groups (families) given a family name, and given a list of items they were allowed to bring on the boat. Using their knowledge of needs and wants, they had to decide as a family what items they really needed and wanted to bring on the boat.

In order to bring in math we gave each family a budget. Our Math TEK states that each student should be able to count a collection of coins up to $1.00. So, each family had $1.00 to spend. Items to purchase included a blanket (.05 cents) a pot to cook food (.10 cents) a plow (.25 cents) etc. Students worked together as a family to make their decisions. Some families went over budget and had to adjust their items.

To conclude the project, they created a mayflower book to present to the other families in class explaining their process of why they chose different items and how close they stayed to their budget. All families did a FABULOUS job and had a successful voyage to Plymouth Rock.
