Falcon Flash
August 26th, 2022
Dear Falcon Friends and Families,
Wow! It was so uplifting to see so many families come out for Smart Start and our Meet and Greet event on Thursday afternoon. The positive energy was palpable! I cannot think of a better way to kick off our school year. Thank you!
Our theme for the year is “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize” with the prize being our vision for student experience. Empowering Students for a Lifetime of Learning and Belonging guides our work here at Forest Hills. We want each and every student to become self actualized as a lifelong learner and as a valued member of a community.
Thank you for your support in helping us realize this vision.
Sincerely,
Jim Mangan, Principal
When you enter our building you will notice our vision written clearly on our lobby bulletin board. Please take a moment to read about when different staff members first dreamed of becoming an educator. It might also be fun to try to identify them by their pictures.

Counselor Corner
Dear Falcon Families,
Welcome to the 2022/23 school year and thank you for being part of our school community! The world is changing quickly and we want to do everything we can to help students be successful in school and in life both socially and emotionally.
I’m excited to share that we will continue utilizing PurposeFull People, a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program this school year. This program teaches skills that will help students be successful in all facets of their life journey.
We believe students should have safe and predictable places to learn where they feel included. Students should also have healthy and helpful connections with teachers and classmates. They should experience learning that will help them tackle challenges inside and outside of school.
During our Social Emotional learning time this year, we have 3 main outcome goals for pir Falcons: Be Kind, Be Strong, and Be Well.
● Be Kind: Social skills like listening, friendship, solving conflicts, and leadership.
○ These skills are taught alongside Empathy, Respect & Cooperation
● Be Strong: Skills that help students focus, stay organized, and set goals.
○ These skills are taught alongside Responsibility, Courage & Perseverance
● Be Well: Skills that help students handle their emotions and deal with stress.
○ These skills are taught alongside Gratitude, Honest & Creativity
I invite you to join us in this learning journey. We will send home letters about the skills and strengths being taught each month. Each newsletter will include some ways to build these skills at home, discussion starters, and fun challenges you can try with your family.
This journey forward is full of growth and opportunity! Together, we will:
● Teach students how to build strong friendships
● Work together to solve problems, big and small
● Grow skills for life
● Become PurposeFull People!!
With sincere gratitude,
Hayley Drimmel

Smart Start - Thank you!
Parents/Guardians,
Thank you for participating in Smart Start. We hope your student and you feel welcome and prepared to start the school year.
Thank you to all who participated in Smart Start 2022. It was a wonderful opportunity specifically for our students with 504s and IEPs, and their parents/guardians, to make introductions with their teachers.
Smart Start is hosted every year, and feedback about your experience is very helpful for planning the event. Please share your input in the follow-up survey -- your responses are appreciated by Tuesday, Sept. 6. Smart Start 2022 Survey
K-2 Devices (iPads)
K-2 students from last year kept their devices (iPads) over the summer. Computer Network Services (CNS) will remotely erase the K-2 iPads the week before school starts. Your iPad needs to be on WiFi, charged to at least 50%, and any data that is needed should be backed up.
If you need any assistance with technology, you can put in a Technology Work Order Request here: https://losdhelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us
Select Your Bus Stop - New Routes are Ready
Bus routes and access points -- or what many call bus stops -- for the 2022-2023 school are now available on the district and school websites under Find It Fast / Transportation. Please review the new routes and select the stop(s) that works best for your family. Families with students receiving special education transportation services will receive bus information directly from case managers next week.
Students who live further than 1 mile away from their resident elementary school and 1.5 miles away from their resident middle or high school are eligible for transportation services. However, service is typically provided closer to avoid crossing major thoroughfares.
Bus registration is not necessary. Access points -- or what most call bus stops -- will be available by mid-August. Look for an email from LOSD notifying you when access points are posted under Transportation on the district and school websites.
Help prepare your child to ride the bus. Select the access point(s) that work best for your family.
Visit your access point before school starts to familiarize your child with their stop.
Look for visual clues to help identify when it’s their time to get off the bus.
Kindergarteners need an adult to greet them off the bus. Bus drivers are obligated to return unattended kindergarteners to school for safekeeping. Please be sure to be at your child’s stop ahead of time to help keep the bus moving for all onboard.
