Hurricane Harvey Coin Drive & Presentation
CES and CMS students had all hands on deck as they participated in a “change” drive to help bring a Positive Change for the families impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The schools teamed up with Mark Twain School and the Alvin School District, a suburb of Houston, to help them in this time of need. Brenda “Huff” Vincent, Concordia Class of 1977, and Nurse Jayme Peterson’s cousin, is Principal at Mark Twain School.
Each year, CES and CMS work together to teach the students the importance of helping those in need. Two sixth grade students, Kaitlyn Nelson and Abbigale Peterson, helped initiate this service project. After visiting with Brenda Vincent, we learned about some of the needs of the community, and started the coin drive. CES and CMS students also reached out to the students at Mark Twain school by writing them letters of encouragement. Also, during the week, to help students understand the impact of the flood on the residents of Houston, Michael Peterson, a Kansas Game Warden, visited and shared pictures with students about his firsthand experience in helping rescue residents of Houston.
At the conclusion of the coin drive, we were able to donate $821.00 and a box full of letters to Mark Twain Schools. Thank you to our CES and CMS families who helped support this great cause.
In the Picture: Kaitlyn Nelson and Abbigale Peterson happily showcase a box full of letters and the raised money in a form of check that was sent to Mark Twain Schools.
