Jan. 28 - Feb. 1, 2019
Monday, we will begin a new unit in Math - Finding the Area of a Shape. We'll start by finding the area of plane shapes. Tuesday, the students will create rectangles that have the same area. Wednesday, we'll find the area of rectangles in square units. Thursday, the students will learn how to use the side lengths of a rectangle to find the area. Friday, we'll use multiplication to find the area.
This week, we'll begin a new unit in Reading - Main Idea & Details. First, the students will be taking a pretest. Then, we will move onto defining the difference between a topic, a main idea sentence, and supporting details. Wednesday, the students will discover that the main idea can usually be found in either the first or last sentence. Thursday, we'll learn strategies to help us eliminate some choices and choose the best main idea. Friday, the students will practice putting the main idea of a paragraph in their own words.
Writing & Spelling
Monday, we will read a couple of persuasive writing pieces that students have written. We'll discuss the author's opinion and reasons that they used to support it. Next, I will model for the class how to state their opinion, give 3 supporting reasons, and add 3 facts that support each reason. Then, the students will be taking their own topic and outlining their own persuasive writing piece.
In Spelling this week, we will cover words with the schwa sound, proverbs, analogies, and possessive nouns.
Tuesday, we will begin a new unit in Social Studies - Westward Expansion. To kick-off this unit, the students will participate in a scavenger hunt to discover what things drew settlers to travel west and what obstacles they faced along their journey. Wednesday, the students will do a gallery walk as they post questions that they have about the pictures. Thursday, we'll learn what caused Native Americans to migrate to Missouri. Friday, we'll jump forward to the arrival of the first Europeans in MO.
