Dear Summit School Community,

What an amazing first couple of days! It has been fantastic seeing our students and our families back on campus. We have welcomed eight new staff members and over 50 new students. We are also welcoming students and families who have been coming in to tour daily. Clearly, the excitement is real. Summit is an amazing place for an exceptional education.

I hope this message finds you enjoying your summer break and hopefully staying cool with these toasty temps rising. As we begin to plan for the upcoming school year, we figured it was a great time to remind you of a couple awesome programs that Summit offers.

Yes, we are still offering a $1,000.00 referral tuition credit for each new student (non-sibling of current student) who is referred to Summit for the 2022-23 school year. The credit will be applied to your FACTS account after 2 months. We greatly appreciate your referrals!

Also, if you or someone you know owns or is a decision-maker in an LLC or S-Corp, there are some new, beneficial tax changes (See message below from IBE).

Corporate Donation season is here and there have been some HUGE things happening at IBE. As you may have heard, our very generous S-Corporations could potentially receive a deduction on their Federal tax forms in addition to the State dollar-for-dollar tax credit.

Coach Joanie started coaching in 2005 in the Bay Area, California. It was her high school coach, Jeff Lamb, who introduced her to coaching. Little did she know how much she would enjoy coaching.! She spent 8 years head coaching girls freshmen volleyball and 4 years head coaching girls JV basketball at her Alma Mater, Milpitas High School (CA). During those years, coach Joanie also helped run various sports camps during the summer. Coach Joanie then moved on to helping coach girls basketball, boys volleyball, and girls volleyball at The Harker School, Upper School (CA). She couldn't get enough coaching so she coached girls club volleyball at Stingray Volleyball Club (CA) and boys club volleyball at Mountain View Volleyball Club (CA). She will continue coaching boys club volleyball at AZ Fear. Coach Joanie is excited to join the Summit School Sabrecats family and to help young athletes become their very best on and off the court!

Reflecting on a career that spans 20-plus years, Ernest Shand is excited to be the Sabercats' new full-time PE Teacher. 'Coach Shand' has taught PE for over 5 years while also coaching basketball at various levels since 2001. A native of Brooklyn, NY - he has resided in the East Valley for almost 16 years. His greatest passions are being a Dad to his daughter Sydney and son Malachy (pronounced Malakai), servant-leadership, education, social justice advocacy, and poetry. He is also very proud of his Costa Rican heritage along with the many young people he's mentored through teaching and coaching. In his "spare time," Coach enjoys watching MMA, listening to music, and considers himself a huge Marvel movie fan. Outside of Summit, you'll find Coach Shand supporting his students in their extracurricular activities from sports to art and music & theatre. Let's go Sabercats!

We all love our Summit School tortoises, Chips and Salsa. To make sure they stay happy and healthy, we are carefully monitoring their diet and refreshing their habitat. We ask that our Summit Community members refrain from giving them any extra treats, adding treasures to their habitat, or handling them. Please use just your eyes to admire our special animals.

If you would like to contribute to their care, please consider donating a Chewy.com gift card to help cover the expense of their special diet. Summit School has an Emergency Response Plan that serves as a guide to help staff and safety partners respond swiftly should a crisis arise. In addition to this plan, our campus has a single point of entry system at the front office.

Guardians are assured that Summit’s safety and security planning and procedures follow the latest available protocols, and that all staff are trained and drilled to perform them in the event of an emergency.

Should an emergency occur while you are on campus, it is important that you are familiar with the following terms:

Lockdown

During a lockdown, all school interior and exterior doors are locked, and all students and staff are confined to a safe room. No entry or exit is permissible until an “all clear” signal is given. This takes place when there is a possible threat inside or outside of the school.

Evacuation

An evacuation may be necessary for the following situations: arson, fire, explosion, hazardous materials leak/spill, bomb threat, or damage to the building. In some cases of a dangerous person on campus, staff and students may be directed to evacuate campus if a safe evacuation path is available.

Shelter-In-Place

This refers to taking refuge in an area inside the school when there is not adequate time to evacuate the school or release students. For example, this procedure may be implemented inside for hazardous materials that have been released into the atmosphere.
