Play, Learn, and Grow in 4K

April 5th

Big picture
Our classroom LOVES the author Mo Willems. He is the creator of the very silly, very sassy Pigeon character. So, in honor of these books that we enjoy so much we decided to do Pigeon activities all week! If you do not have these books at home, I would highly recommend them. They really get children excited about reading. Next week, we will read Elephant and Piggie, another beloved series by Mo Willems. Check out the adorable Pigeons that children painted below!

Book Making

The children made their very own "Pigeon" books this week as part of our literacy small-groups. Before we made the books we discussed where the title goes, the front and back of the book, what an author/illustrator is, and where the pictures and text goes on the pages. Bookmaking teaches children important concepts of print, like reading left to right and the fact that letters and words convey meaning. This experience helps the children to see themselves as writers and boy did they do wonderful work! Click on the pictures to make the bigger.

Math

We practiced our counting skills this week with a fun game that included our new favorite book character. To play this game, the children dropped a handful of cubes onto the Pigeon. They counted how many cubes landed on the Pigeon and how many cubes landed off. We then compared to see which has the most cubes: on or off. Then the children recorded their answers by writing the numeral on their paper.

Summer School

The School District of Waukesha offers a summer program for incoming Kindergarteners. It is a wonderful program for all 4Kers and a great way to continue learning throughout the summer. I included a description of the program below, as well as a link to the website. Registration ends April 18th. If you have questions please let me know!

KINDERGARTEN SUMMER EXPERIENCE (for students entering Kindergarten in Fall 2018)

This class is designed to prepare children for the structure of Kindergarten. Each day children will be engaged in whole-group and small-group mini-lessons focused around literacy and math. Literacy concepts may include: alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, concepts of print, and early writing. Math concepts may include: one-to-one counting, number recognition, patterns and early measurement. Throughout the entire morning there will be an emphasis on independently following routines/directions and being a part of the classroom community. Please note that this class runs from 8:15 a.m.- 12:00 p.m., so please send a snack and water bottle each day.

Summer School runs from Monday, June 17, 2019 and ends on Friday, July 19, 2019. There will be no class on July 4th and 5th.

Volunteer in the Classroom

I have shared a link below to the classroom volunteer calendar. Assisting in the classroom is a great way to get involved and to learn what your child's school day is like. You can choose to stay for the whole class session or if it works better for your schedule you can just stop by to be a special story time reader. While in the classroom I may have a special project for you or I may just have you interacting and playing with the kids. Please sign up for a date and time that works best for you.

4K Volunteer Schedule

Before your first time volunteering you have to complete a background check with the school district. Here is a link for the background check:
