Otsego High School
Weekly Newsletter (Holiday Break Edition)
From the Desk of Mr. O'Shea
Happy Holidays!
Remember that the holidays can also be a very stressful and painful time for a lot of families. Many families in our school and community during this time, are reminded of lost love ones and struggle with the financial hardships that the holidays can bring. So as you celebrate and spend time with your families, please keep each other in your hearts and minds.
This time of year is one of my favorites not just for the few short days I get to spend with my family members but perhaps even more importantly because it brings out the best in most of us. I am especially proud of our students and staff for their efforts in helping people from our community who are in need. From collecting used batteries, the Knights Have Your Back program, the Knight in Shining Armor Fund, the Otsego Community Garden, our donations to local churches and the community food pantry and the Holiday Gift Basket collections. We are doing great things and putting the needs of others ahead of our own. Truly raising kids that Love, Care, and Serve.
We are truly blessed to have a each other and the time we spend together at school is something that should be cherished. Looking forward to seeing all of you back in January 2018. From my family to all of yours, have a safe and happy holiday.
Teachable Moments
OTSEGO Community Reads Initiative!
This week we gave each student a book, Choosing Courage by Peter Collier. It is theirs to keep and they are encouraged to read it. Copies of the book will also be gifted to community agencies, like local EMS and fire departments, too. The Medal of Honor Foundation provided the book for teachers at then end-of-year Professional Development. If you would like a copy of the book to read we have copies in the High School Office. Just stop in and request or email me.
Huge Shelen Stevens and the Weston Public Library for donating over 1200 books for this initiative. She has been a major part of helping put this together and we couldn't have done it without her. Thank You Shelen.
This book is the first selection for the Community Reads Initiative (CRI) as it reflects the goals and themes of the 2017-2018 school year "Be An Everyday Hero". A new book will be selected every year.
One of the goals of the CRI is to build community connections through a shared reading experience. Faculty and staff are not being asked to do anything. The CRI is encouraging everyone to read the book and participate in conversations in and around the community.

Knight in Shining Armor Nominations
Please use the following form to inform OHS Student Council about a family in need within the school district. While the family does not need to have students in the district, we do ask that they are a member of the Otsego Community. Please use this form to share information about their current situation as well as how they can best be assisted.
Please be sure to understand that while Knight in Shining Armor (KISA) would love to help all community members in need, we are still a new program, and may not have the funds to do so. With that being said, we will consider each request on a case by case basis. Filling this form out does not guarantee that we will be able to assist the family, but we will try our hardest to do so!
Here are some things that we have done with KISA funds:
- School supplies were purchased for multiple families.
- Gas money has been provided to get to and from medical treatment.
- Food cards have been provided to help families afford meals while going through medical treatment.
- Cash donations have been made to families to help assist in paying bills during medical treatment.
- Gift cards and supplies have been provided to help make ends meet after housing emergencies have occurred.
Please refer to this link at any point during the year as a need arises, and KISA will do their best to help out!
