Principal's Message
Alcova Families,
Thank you for all of your support and activity with our school this week. Seeing you visit our teachers to hear about your child's progress was appreciated and admirable. We know that this will help your child soar. The partnership that you have created and desired to sustain, speaks volumes of your amazing parenting. We see you and will always welcome you into our school doors! A special thank you to our Alcova PTA along with many of our parents who provided snacks and lunch for our teachers during the early release days. We appreciate you!
READING
SINCE THE FIRST SEMESTER HAS ENDED AND WE ARE ON OUR WAY TO COMPLETING THE 3RD NINE WEEKS OF SCHOOL, WE ARE NOTICING THAT MORE OF OUR STUDENTS ARE BELOW READING LEVEL THAN ON OR ABOVE. THIS IS A SERIOUS CONCERN THAT WE NEED TO IMPROVE. I AM SURE MANY OF YOU HAD QUESTIONS AFTER THE EARLY RELEASE CONFERENCES OF HOW CAN YOU ASSIST WITH YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING. CAN YOU HELP US WITH THIS? CAN YOU MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILDREN ARE INCREASING THEIR READING AND BEING ASKED QUESTIONS? THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO DO THIS, EVEN ONLINE. THEY MUST READ BOOKS TO GAIN THE STAMINA TO READ LONGER TEXTS. THANK YOU FOR HELPING US CREATE MORE ON GRADE LEVEL OR ABOVE READERS!
WE ARE TASKED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE LITERATE READERS AND WRITERS. WE ARE EQUIPPED WITH TEACHING THEM TO READ ANALYTICALLY AND WRITE CLEAR MESSAGES IN DIFFERENT GENRES. IT IS HELPFUL IF YOU ARE ABLE TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE READING EVERY NIGHT AND TAKING THE TIME TO PRACTICE THROUGH THEIR HOMEWORK. THIS WILL HELP TREMENDOUSLY WITH STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND OWNERSHIP OF THEIR LEARNING.
Student Behavior:
Please encourage your child to model great behavior at school. We are noticing higher than normal incidences at this time of year of some students who are making poor choices. We appreciate you for discussing great behavior with your child frequently. Misbehavior in class and on the bus prevents your child from being the best they can be. Letting them know that a misbehavior call would disappoint you, will help our students in knowing that you are expecting great behavior at home as well. Thanks for your support with this.
Car Riders Procedures
Please do not release students from the top of the Ewing Chapel Road, release from the bus lane, walk them in from the grassy area near car riders in the morning, or pass other cars dropping off in the car rider lane. It is not safe and it presents hazards for our kids because no one is there to supervise him or her in those areas. Please follow the planned procedures for car riders. We want to show understanding to all of our parents who come early to sit in line and assure that they are able to get their child in soon and off to work as well. Coming in to circumvent that poses a problem for all car rider parents and those that patiently wait in their cars. If you have any feedback for this procedure, please do not hesitate to call me.
Your Proud Principal,
Cortina Harris

Career Day
On Thursday, March 26th our school will be hosting a Career Awareness
Day for 4th and 5th grade students. It is important for students to hear from
successful individuals from a diverse background of knowledge and careers to
whom they can identify. We would like the students to hear about different
careers and understand the relevance of academic learning to the tasks they
might someday perform in the working world. It is a great experience for our
students here at Alcova Elementary School to learn and explore the many
different careers that exist in our community.
In preparing for this exciting day, we would like to know if you would be willing
to come in and speak about your career or if you know someone that would be willing to come to Alcova . Please email Adriane Grey or Amy O’Neal
by Friday, March 6th . Each speaker will present 3 times to a class
of about 28 students in 4th or 5th grade. You may choose the morning and/or
afternoon Career Day sessions. We will send you additional information in the
weeks to come. We appreciate your help in educating our students about the vast
career opportunities in the world of work.
Many Thanks,
Adriane Grey
