Special Services Parent Action Committee Presents IEP 2.0
Staff Development Room at Lake Oswego High School
2501 Country Club Road; LO
You hear a lot about inclusion, but what is it really? Is your child truly in the least restrictive environment (LRE)? This program is for parents and caregivers who have been through the IEP process, but want to step up their advocacy. You are an integral part of the IEP team. Make sure you know what you're doing. Join us as SSPAC partners with FACT Oregon for "IEP: 2.0". Feel free to bring your own IEP so you can follow along and ask the questions you've always wanted to ask.
Please note that the Staff Development Room is not in the main LOHS building, but is between the high school and swimming pool.

In March, the City of Lake Oswego will welcome Japanese middle-school students visiting from our sister city, Yoshikawa, Japan. The students will enjoy a week-long visit which will include time learning about local government, spending time with our students at Lake Oswego Junior High and enjoying our community with their host families.
Spending time with their American host families is surely a delight for each of the visiting students. Portland Educational Tour Center is seeking 17 families interested in hosting a student during their stay, between Friday, March 29 and Thursday, April 4. A per diem is available to each host family.
If you are interested, please contact Toshiko Morrow at 503-221-6132 or email at tmorrow@educationtourcenter.com
Bryant Tiles Can Now be Ordered
In order to preserve the history of Bryant Elementary, the Lake Oswego School District commissioned a professional photographer to take high-resolution photographs of each tile on the outside of Bryant Elementary School. The photographer has uploaded the photos to a Flickr website for people to identify their tiles and order them from Cedar House Media.
The "read me first" information can be found here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bryantart/albums.
The link to order tiles is embedded in the Flickr set in the description of the overview images here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bryantart/46815905302/in/album-72157704627298421/. Or, the order form can be found here: https://www.mariogallucciphoto.com/lake-oswego-tiles.

Partnership with SMART
Oak Creek Elementary is excited to partner with SMART (Start Making A Reader Today), the nationally-recognized Oregon nonprofit providing one-on-one reading support and books to keep to PreK through third-grade kids. Over the past 26 years, SMART has paired more than 134,000 volunteers with 211,000 kids to build reading motivation, self-confidence, and foster a lifelong love of reading.
The SMART program at Oak Creek Elementary is the first in the Lake Oswego School District. SMART focuses on partnering with Oregon schools that have a high proportion of historically underserved kids. While Lake Oswego is affluent compared to much of the state, Oak Creek is designated as a Title I school, serving a high proportion of students from economically disadvantaged households.
Focused on getting kids excited about books and reading, SMART will serve 25 kindergarten students at Oak Creek this year and more than 11,000 across the state. We hope you will consider making a gift to support the program at Oak Creek and schools across Oregon. A gift of just $40 provides a year’s worth of books for a child in SMART to keep and build their personal library, and a gift of $325 provides a full year of SMART for one child. Visit getSMARToregon.org/donate or call 971-634-1634 to learn more about how you can make a difference in the lives of Oregon kids.
"Listening to Young People" Conversation Night
When: May 1, 6:00pm-7:30pm
Where: River Grove Elementary School, 5850 McEwan Road, LO
Who is invited: All Lake Oswego community members *Childcare and food will be provided
What does it look like when adults really listen to young people? Cultural beliefs about young people perpetuate myths that cause harm, especially when combined with laws that control their physical and emotional autonomy and limit their ability to participate in public life. Young people experiencing marginalization for any reason—race, gender, sexuality, ability—also have the added layer of not being taken seriously because of their age, yet the history of social justice movements in the United States is deeply connected to young people’s agency, autonomy, and power. Join Oregon Humanities Conversation Project facilitator Emily Squires, and the River Grove Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Team for a conversation that asks folks to explore their own beliefs about what it means to be young, and to reflect on their individual relationship to power as it relates to age.

If parents are ever concerned about a student’s well-being, feel free to reach out to your principal. It is important to keep your lines of communication open and maintain strong partnerships between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon also is an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also know that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
