Possible Reasons for Changes

Parental Roles / Income Distribution

  1. Was your Grandmother a stay at home mom?
  2. 2. Who has a stay at home mom? (Mom that isn't in the work force)
The amount of time parents spent doing housework has changed significantly too. Fathers’ time spent doing household chores has more than doubled since 1965 (from an average of about four hours per week to about 10 hours). Mothers’ time doing housework has gone down significantly over the same period (from 32 hours per week to 18).
"Among mothers with children under age 18, the share saying they would prefer to work full time has increased from 20% in 2007 to 32% in 2012." (Modern Parenthood)

Divorce

Why?

  • Before 1970, divorce was relatively uncommon and difficult to get. One of the spouses must have had to commit a crime or sin that justified the divorce. There needed to be adultery, abandonment, cruelty, intoxication or some other reason that made it necessary to end the marriage.

  • By 1970, almost all states had laws allowing no-fault divorces.

  • Women became a strong presence in the workforce. They no longer depended on their husbands to support them. This independence allowed them to leave an unhappy marriage and still provide for themselves.

Altered Opinions

"I think society in general is all up in this "self-esteem, take care of yourself, be self-sufficient" attitude and the people hitting their adult age right now have been brought up to believe that they need to get what they want out of life before settling down."

"What"s the point....!"

"People are scared of commitment."

"Maybe there is someone better out there, so why stay with one."

"I want the perfect man/ woman."

"I might regret it."

"I only want to get married once, so it has to be the one."
