Home and School Connection: MATH CORNER
Multiply and Divide
Learning to multiply and divide can be more about thinking than memorizing. Strategies like these can help your child practice.
Make it fun. Practice using toys or food. If your child collects toy animals, you might ask, “How many legs do 4 horses have?” He/She can “skip count” the legs by 4s (4, 8, 12, 16) to see that 4 x 4 = 16. If he/she has 17 pretzels and wants to give 3 friends an equal amount, he/she can “deal them out.” He’ll/She’ll see that each person gets 5, and there are 2 left over. (17 ÷ 3 = 5, remainder 2)
Use what you know. Encourage your youngster to look for clues to help him/her solve problems. For 8 x 7, he/she could consider other facts he/she knows. “I know 4 groups of 7 = 28. I need 8 groups so I can double that answer. If 28 + 28 = 56, then 8 x 7 = 56.” For 30 ÷ 5, he/she might say, “I know 10 ÷ 5 = 2. There are three 10s in 30, and 3 x 2 = 6. So 30 ÷ 5 must be 6.”

Technology Enhancements for the 2018-2019 School Year!
It is no surprise that we are already planning for the 2018-2019 school year! The Park Hill Department of Technology and Instructional Technology completed an exploration process for expanding devices at the elementary level. During this process, one common piece of feedback that was overwhelmingly clear was the need for more devices in Kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms. Based on this feedback, teacher interviews and extensive research, the Park Hill Department of Technology and Instructional Technology announced earlier this week that we would be expanding the devices available in all Kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms. Beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, students in third through fifth grade will have one-to-one laptop access and students in Kindergarten through second grade will have two-to-one laptop access.
Kindergarten through second grade teachers also expressed a need for even more than a two-to-one level of access overall and Kindergarten through first grade teachers shared a desire to consider iPads as an alternative device type. Therefore, we will be piloting one-to-one laptops in select Kindergarten through second grade classrooms and one-to-one iPads in select Kindergarten and first grade classrooms. The one-to-one pilots will help us determine future actions regarding ideal device types and ratios at each of these levels.
We are excited that this expansion will provide students with the technology access needed to support Park Hill curriculum and 21st century learning goals.

Families with children entering kindergarten in the Park Hill School District in August 2018 may enroll now by visiting English Landing Elementary School between 7:45 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday on days when school is in session. Children who turn five on or before July 31 are eligible for kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year.

The other should be an original and current gas, electric or water bill on which the name and address are provided.
After you enroll, mark your calendar for the Kindergarten Roundup event at English Landing Elementary School on Monday, April 30. Our Kindergarten Roundup is an Open House format (5:30pm-7:00pm). Parents and students will get a sneak peak of our school, tour the building, ask questions and get to know the staff.

CELEBRATING STUDENT BIRTHDAYS AT ENGLISH LANDING
Celebrating Student Birthdays: (Park Hill Parent/Student Handbook pages 37-38):
We are happy to celebrate student birthdays and half birthdays (if your child has a summer birthday) at English Landing! To protect the health and safety of our students, families may bring pre-packaged treats to school to share with classmates. In order to address any known allergy concerns, a label listing ingredients should be affixed to the package. Due to allergies and other food intolerances, please consult with your classroom teacher before the pre-packaged treats are brought to school. As a healthier alternative, Park Hill Food Service offers a variety of nutritious treats that may be purchased.
At English Landing we need your HELP! Many birthday treats arrive at the beginning of the school day which provides us time to review the class list regarding food allergies or food intolerances, however, many other birthday treats arrive during lunch and often right at the same time the treat needs to be distributed to students. PLEASE plan on arriving earlier for lunch (at least 15 minutes) to give us time to check the pre-packaged treat ingredients with the students in the classroom who have food allergies or food intolerances. Our school nurse, Mrs. Kimbrel, and office staff, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Wood, or Mrs. Melvin, will help with this process so when the lunchroom staff teachers distribute the treat in the cafeteria, additional steps have been taken to ensure we are protecting the health and safety of our eagles.
