Superintendent's Notes
Issue 27: February 13, 2020
My Thoughts...
Last night, the Board of Education voted to approve the 2020-2021 school calendar (full calendar link and download included below). Almost 4,000 parents, community members, students, and employees participated in our survey asking for stakeholder preference on a September 1 or September 8 start date. Responses were in favor almost two to one of the September 1 start date. It is my intention to always begin school in September and depending on where Labor Day falls each year, that will be a factor of whether our first student day will be before or after Labor Day. Thank you to all of the stakeholders who served on this year's Calendar Committee and to everyone who responded to our survey.
Last night's board meeting also included a number of recognitions including proclamations for Black History Month, National Career and Technical Education Month, and Read Across America Day. We also recognized January and February's Community Partners of the Month. I would like to congratulate Superdojo Martial Arts and Wright's A.M.E. Church for their support of our students and schools which more than merits each of them as deserving recipients of this recognition.
I would also like to congratulate our students in the Drug Free Cecil Youth Coalition who attended the National CADCA Forum in Washington, DC last week. They are featured below and we are so proud of the work they are doing; they are making an impact not only in Cecil County, but on the national front, as well.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jeffrey A. Lawson

Community Partner of the Month
Josh Hayhurst and Dev Manekporia are known for bringing their energetic spirits into schools across Cecil County in an effort to encourage students to make positive, healthy choices. They mentor students; have each served as Principal for a Day and will be doing so again this year, and have recently volunteered to serve as a business partner for Chesapeake City Elementary School. Their constant mantra to school staff and school leadership is, “We’ll do whatever we can do help.”
Community Partner of the Month
This year, Wright’s A.M.E. Church hosted its 30th annual Martin Luther King Jr celebration. This event brings together community leaders, elected officials, school system leadership, and congregations from churches across the county to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. This commitment to uniting the overall community has also positively impacted our schools through outreach and student mentor programs with members of the Wright’s congregation. The relationship between CCPS and the Wright's church, as neighbors, led to the acquisition of the former CCPS maintenance building, originally the Elkton Colored School, in partnership with the county, the Town of Elkon, and Morgan State University, which will be renovated to house a museum and cultural center.
